Didn't he have some drama with his kid in hospital recently... Hope there hasn't been a relapse, even if there hasn't, I think it's worth cutting him some slack, that kind of thing can shake you.

Thing is, he kept us supporters up to date with sporadic updates on discord until the 29th of April. Then went dark.
Something really bad could've happened, but nobody outside the dev's immediate family would know.
Yup... like I said, if something did happen I wouldn't blame him for forgetting to tell a bunch of strangers... even if something didn't happen he probably has to deal with learning a new routine that takes his kids medical needs into account, the inevitable loss of sleep that hypervigilance/fear of a relapse would cause, he would be under pressure to pay more attention to family (both from his spouse and his own conscience/fears), not to mention he might be under financial pressure to deal with medical bills and any lost time at his real job... a bunch of stuff could be happening...
Personally I'm inclined to cut him some slack for a few months, let things normalise.. I'm not suggesting anyone should continue to pledge money with no communication, just that I think its reasonable to expect his mind to be scattered for a while.
He has returned to discord to drop a message.

Nobody died so it could be worse, which is good news.
One Illuminati paused payment last month and another was about to do so this month, so there's a little hope that we'll get something before September. It's doubtful, mind.

It's hard to write one as you may have figured.
It depends on playstyle and preferences in the girls.
As progress is in most cases linked to other ingame characters and their relation to MC and progress as well, it's really hard to write a common linear wt.
e.g. if you start to write a wt on Meredith, her progress is linked to Melvin's hidden shop, to Mitchel who names some state authorities, those at laboratory.
If you hadn't progressed with their story, the Meredith wt is stuck.
Same to ...., ...., and so forth...
or e.g. Taylor .... dunno, where a wt should start at to unfold her "naughtier" story after facing her thong at work. How many characters are previous her scenes involved which are also linked to other characters? Audrey, Dominic, Cecilia, Claire (photo session progress) and therefore Melvin as well, Mitchell and his Maid but Whitney and the hospital crew as well...
If you hadn't figured how to progress with those, the single character wt on her is wasted...
Either stick to the step by step wt or look up Horizontical's wt on patreon. The hindrance would be, if there would be some real randomized events (which aren't) with a programmed "chance" to happen.
And if you are stuck somewhere, there is/was always someone answering on f95zone

Is this playable without following that 50 page walkthrough? Just with the in-game task system? Or will I just get stuck because I didn't do things in the "right order"?
I've never used a walkthrough and I do alright. but I guess it depends on whether you can read the dialogue and pay attention to whats going on in the game. try to not be the nice guy since that content isn't done yet it mostly leads to dead ends. (I mean ever... this game is mostly Black and White, being "Nice" can lock out you out of "Bad guy" options) ... save often across multiple slots.
Oh yeah. I can be a nice guy just fine in real life. I don't need a game for that
