No need to start over. Download and install a save from the update just before the one things went south for you and take it from there.

If you want a bunch of text without anything to look at, sure. That would literally require making renders for the entire game.

How and where were you placing the files, did you extract them from the zip files before placing them in the folder
because I just tested 0.38 and it works fine

As for the crack I just tested the one you linked to and it works fine

But just in case here's the UNCRACKED version of the file, you can use it to replace what you have, run the game, quit the game, then replace the file with the cracked version.

You can only save by leaving the game using the red button in the right upper corner. You then get the option to save.

For me it goes in ~/Library/Application Support/unity.KsTgames.The Twist
