This was my thinking too but despite renaming the file, windows still thinks of it as encrypted and that is probably why it's not doing anything.

Have you really named it "patch.rpy" important that there no "." after rpy
If you have a problem there is another thing you can do and who also works (I've tested)
In the folder "game" of the game you can create a new file ".txt" with notepad by exemple
name it "patch.rpy" be aware to overwrite "txt" by "rpy"
Don't be aware of the file "patch.rpyc" (renpy automatically builds it after you lunch the game)

Shift+o doesn't work for me, either, but is it really an issue? Even without it if you follow the walkthrough you'll get enough money to buy the hacking software.
