It does look like that your PC's config setting are "broken"...

First check Event Viewer for logs for the crash. Then try to delete the VNgine folder in AppData/locallow (not your save folder) and try to start the game again.

If this doesn't work you should try to run Windows System File Checker tool to repair missing or corrupted system files (sfc /scannow) - more here:

it's a bit of a potato at 2.3 ghz processor and 8gb ram, 64-bit. performance had not been an issue to date so I figured it was likely something else.

In which language do you prefer i write for you ?
Because maybe you wasn't able to read the hundred of answers to a similar question.
Ok i try in English .. Old Saves don't work .. there are no kind of update or patch that can make working past saves from a previous release.
This is a revamped edition, with a tons of new contents starting already in the first day with a game play completely improved , faster and better ; if you would not play from the start not only you will lose some new contents but also some part of the plot , this release is probably the best revamped edition made , to play it from the begin it's completely worthy...

You tried to install Visual C++ 2015 on top of newer version like 2017 etc. You need to deleted newer version first. Then install 2015 (I recommend to install both dlls x64 and x86) and on top you can install C++ 2017 etc.

Is this the final version? Starting the game for the first time seems to suggest it will be.

We'll see more chapters for sure, how they will handle, I don't know. Anyway the game is not finished.

The translator is a human being and need to go through 300+ dialogue files and translate them. He doesn't use machine translation as other people do. Means he needs more time.
