it's a bit of a potato at 2.3 ghz processor and 8gb ram, 64-bit. performance had not been an issue to date so I figured it was likely something else.What are the specs of your system?
It does look like that your PC's config setting are "broken"...
First check Event Viewer for logs for the crash. Then try to delete the VNgine folder in AppData/locallow (not your save folder) and try to start the game again.
If this doesn't work you should try to run Windows System File Checker tool to repair missing or corrupted system files (sfc /scannow) - more here:

naive question but how do i check the event viewer?
deleting the VNgine folder did not work, and the Windows system file checker did not find any issues. I'm beginning to think it was not meant to be. thanks.
