The term "overkill" comes to mind.Could you imagine a full-auto 44-40 or maybe even a full-auto 45-70 for squirrels?![]()
When I was in around second grade we were collecting a side of beef, as well as doing a dove hunt, at a friend's ranch. Saw some squirrels and a couple of the guys thought they might get some for a pot of dumplings later. Had a squirrel in a tree, about 15 feet up at most, and one of the guys (probably around 14 or 15) had a Savage-Stevens over/under .22/410g and forgot to set the hammer right. Cleaned the squirrel with one shot - poor thing. Not enough left to do much with him. Didn't see many others around, so I think we gave that up fried up some chickens instead - we took the dove back home. I had a bolt action Savage-Stevens 410g and my dad had thought I'd done it, but even at that age, I knew better than to shoot a squirrel that close with bird shot.
