The Simpsons takes place in Oregon I think. Not Missouri. Those are two completely different cultures.
They intentionally don't have where it is, but Matt Groening grew up in Springfield, OR and said it's based on that. The movie said the sates that border it - states nowhere near each other. Some things are obvious though - it has a port, it's temperate, etc...

And "Springfield" was chosen for The Simpsons because most US states have a city/town named "Springfield" - it's kind of the "Main Street" of city names.

I've never been to these countries, so I couldn't "experience" them. Of course I have some superficial information. It's the same as people from the USA have only superficial information about Asia, or about Europe. How many of you know without a hint what the difference is between Austria and Germany? Or how many provinces does China have?

And I know Springield, it's one of the most common names in the USA.
