It'exactly that, they started adding stuff on a structure that wasn't ment for that and inevitably got to a critical limit.It sounds more like they did some refactoring and rewrote existing systems, because they found better ways to do some things. In that case they might encounter unexpected bugs and would have to work through them one by one. No way around it.
Now they are rebuilding the basic program to support the present and future enhancements.
As you properly pointed out, this can face them with glitches of any kind, from freezing to ragdoll etc..
Let's just hope they took the steps in the right direction, it'll be heaven or hell
