Yeah, I think that's completely fair. From the perspective of a character-driven narrative, there's no real argument against it. In my opinion, though, this game isn't a character-driven narrative. If the MC made clear that he wouldn't even think of raping her, then this immediately gets rid of the tension that the dev was building up. Instead, he forces the MC to be more aloof, so we get the moment of catharsis in the hotel room.My argument is just that that could have been accomplished with him still snapping at her, and even ordering her around and threatening her with the police to do what he says.
But then before it got to the point of the hotel and her thinking she was going to be sexually assaulted the MC could have stepped back and just told her that he was trying to help her and would not hurt her.
He knew he was scaring her.
I'm not really arguing in favor of either, just trying to explain why I didn't mind this scene happening the way it did. There certainly was an aspect of the scene feeling forced, but the positive feelings it elicited were more powerful for me than that little frustration.
Considering the alternative scenario where the MC tells her she's safe before reaching the hotel... Would she have been in the state of mind to believe it? It wouldn't be farfetched for her to think he was placating her to keep her quiet, but that her fate was sealed. But, on the other hand, I don't think there's a sign of the MC even considering this. (It's been a while.)
