No. You can play flatscreen.

This definitely shouldn't take that long. I know this might sound bad, but I suggest doing the following:

• visit MeshedVR's Patreon "
  You must be registered to see the links
  " page
• download the official "VaM Updater" from that page (it's only 1 MB) and place it into an empty folder
• extract and execute the "VaM_Updater.exe"

This will download the most recent official files, and then try running it again. To be fair, I've never downloaded the file(s) linked in the OP, I've always used the official Updater and never had any issues.

I have been getting nothing but a black screen in desktop mode, even with a fresh download. Any advice?

Are you running in VR mode? Then you will be put in VR directly, you'll have a small button at the bottom left to go to desktop mode, or you can press M.

Get the .var and paste it in your addonspacakge folder. Some .var have all dependencies "conveniently" included. But others will make you download dozens of dependencies.

i think there really should be a tutorial on the first page. vam has a steep learning curve and without following any guides its really hard to do anything with it. maybe a yt link like this

Neither modes are working. I tried a controller, too, and one button brought up Steam; I somehow brought up a digital keyboard but that didn't last. It's all just black screen.

I liked a doll with tattoos, I saved its preset and loaded it in another scene, and it turned out to be without tattoos, I thought it's okay, I saved (skin preset) again loaded it in another scene, and it again turned out to be without tattoos.... I thought no big deal, saved (Apperance preset), loaded it again in another scene, and she was again without tattoos. Now I don't know what to do, how to save her original preset with tattoos? Maybe someone knows how to solve this problem? I also tried to save with (cua manager), nothing works.

check if the original scene is using something like

for applying tattoos. if thats the case then you have to add that plugin and add the tattoos in other scene too. i think decal maker allows you to save presets so its better to do that than add decals manually. you could also save it as a plugin preset and load that.
