Not comon-law adopted, probably more like once you are actually part of the family and not just an underling mook, you get the family name. That would explain why the Krayt leader is an Aranos despite being black and the other Aranos like Helen very much not being so. The families take in and uplift people to the Family even if they're not blood related.OK, whut? Why couldn't Ayua Zane be William Grimaldi ZANE and Miru (or whatever her real name)'s child? The Grimaldi family doesn't exist anymore. William and Leia both use Zane, and are referred to by outsiders including cops as Zane. I am pretty sure that is their actual legal last names now. Despite not being adopted or foster kids... (yeah, that's stupid, but so's Palimony). Maybe they're common-law adopted?
Maybe Ocean introduced that as a custom for all the families to make it seem not so weird that the Zanes did so for William and Leia.
