they just released the next version on discord. it mostly focuses on terri.

• post-training, Terri will sometimes wear the cheerleader outfit when she comes to visit you, if you gave her cheerleader lingerie during her training. This will allow you to have sex with her during that visit.

And this is an update on a whole year's worth of work? It's certainly a significant update, but 0 new perosnages? I'm disappointed.

These new letter are, as mentioned many times, solely improvement updates on existing personages. Once all are improved, they will look further for added content.

This is a spare time project for them. That being said, why don't you try yourself on adding new characters? The boilerplate for it is available and it is pretty straight forward.
They refuse to take any money for it, this is a pure passion project so the speed of development isn't something that bothers me. They plan to add one more wave of clients eventually.
If it takes the author a year to expand the content for 1 existing character, I'm afraid only my grandchildren will see new characters in this game.
The game has only had 2 characters added by modders with the last one being released in 2021. One of the main drivers for getting this into renpy was to enable modding, but it hasn't really worked for them. I don't think its very easy at all.

It isn't. I wrote and planned Kagney's mod with the help of Semiecardia and him coding it in. It took almost 8 months to gather media, write, test, plan out her stats, and launch.
Her Post Training is still a WIP as well. That also took about 4 months of more media, planning, writing, etc. Sem is now coding it in when he can but he's doing it for free and I've never rushed him.
It's a HUGE endeavor to mod and I don't see it happening until way more people with actual expertise come around to it.

I really do like this game and its a bit sad that it is "just" a passion project and so slow in its development.

Glad to see they're still working on this project.
Admittedly I'm a bit disappointed to hear how difficult the modding process is, but I can't really say I'm that surprised. Wife Trainer has always been a very complex game, even back when it was still on the RAGS engine. Moving to Ren'py (or any other game engine for that matter) isn't going to change that amount of complexity.
The game being complex with a ton of moving parts isn't inherently a bad thing, but as others pointed out it's going to be a much harder sell to get any casual modders interested.
If I had to guess, the devs' decision not to take money for this project is also likely for legal reasons. I've always wondered how "Real Porn" developers are able to legally accept money for these types of games when they're using the images of real adult film stars. You see it on a lot of HTML games posted on this site, they'll have a SubscribeStar, Patreon, Kofi account meanwhile they're using someone else's work in their game without authorization. I'm no lawyer but that feels like trying to navigate a minefield to me...
Anyways, good luck to the devs and modders. I'm looking forward to revisiting this game since it's been a few updates since I've played. I'll probably add the Kagney mod too, thanks for putting that together Haseo!

Well, considering the modding documentation is basically non-existent, it makes sense there are not more modders. Not to mention a whole new character is a lot of work. Haseo spent a lot of time writing for Kagney and gathering images etc. and I am still coding her.
Also remember that modders and developers are people too and often have full time works and potentially families. Balancing work time, "free time" and social obligation can be a challenge and having to then spend your free time for essentially another (unpaid) job in the form of modding is not a prospect most people look forward to.
I also appreciate Haseo not rushing me coding Kagney. If they had rushed me, I would simply have dropped the project. But I am chipping away on it. But I am also working on a wiki and a guide system and a bunch of other projects relating to this game and I have to balance that with working, family, social obligations and recuperating for work.

maybe be completely bs, but this is what i think.
HTML real porn games are free. so no legal issue there. they have patreon and stuff for mostly cheats and guides, which i think gives them some leeway with legal issues.
So the trick is make a HTML/RP game super grindy, andmonetise the guide/cheat.
As for WifeTrainer, this is the most unique game i have come across here, with right amount of grind and content, and kinda infinte replayability.

I'm just happy the game is still alive. Haven't played it in a few years, but it's one of the more unique projects I've come across, and the dev (and occasional volunteers) still pushing along as a pure hobby project is encouraging to see.
There are a lot of solid games on this site that are very similar to each other, moving within a few established lanes both in terms of kinks and mechanics. Anything that tries to push the envelope a bit is to be applauded.
