Lore wise, this world was created as entertainment for the creator god and it implemented a bunch of systems effectively to create a neverending war between humans and demons. Game systems were implemented like people having natural skill levels and level caps. Rance just happened to be born with good skills but more importantly with no level cap since the system itself wasn't perfect. The church is supposed to collect these "balance breakers" and seal them away but seeing as the pope is a party member, you can see why he's still walking around free.

The worst part is when there's no characterisation in h scenes that makes me question 'what the fuck was the point of that?'

So it's often super short h scenes of Rance's 'GAHAHAHAHA', the girl crying for mercy and asking not to cum inside. And he does it anyway. And then we learn something new about the character.
Straight to the point. Love it.

You can roughly outline Rance games according to who was the scenario writer. For the early games, it was usually TADA (I to 4.2); for the games in the middle, it's usually Tori (KR to SR); and for the later games it's Yoidore Dragon + Dice Kogorashi (Quest to X). Do take this with a grain of salt because other people, aside from the aforementioned, do contribute to the world-building like Orion.

TADA is TADA, Tori is the one who's into most of the hardcore rape and degeneracy, and Yoidore Dragon's the newbie. For the latter, we could see he's still kind of rough around the edges in his writing (thus some of the complaints that while the story is good, the writing seems pretty weak at times like there are not much stakes). He does get a lot better down the line so we can breathe a sigh of relief for X.

Most likely, you liked Tori's writing and you're into some non-consensual hand-holding (like me). Tori was so fucked in the head that TADA had to rein her in and be the "voice of reason" in a rape-ge, which is pretty funny. I don't know why but she left in the middle of DTK's development (before Quest) so that ends her involvement with Alicesoft.

God- that explains soooo much. Guess I just fell in love with Tori's writing. I'm assuming she wrote the script for my first love- Emi Alphorne.

How about the bad ends of Rance 9 or the hardcore sadist stuff of Dohna Dohna? Who wrote that?
If I assume Tori was the one in-charge of the parts that made Rance 6 awesome, who do I give the credit for the godly sadist torture porn in later Alicesoft games?

After some googling, some dude called Dice Korogashi and Yoidore Dragon (that you mentioned) popped up. But it can't possibly be that two dudes (and TADA) wrote the entirety of Rance 9 or Dohna Dohna right? Or should I blame these two bastards for making Rance exceedingly vanilla.

I'm fairly certain (and I have no evidence for this but...) the scenario writing for Rance 9 in the bad ends, the normal war stuff and normal porn scenes can't possibly be the same dude. The writing is just WAYYY too drastically different. It's like a shift between two movies or genres.

It's as though there was one writer was into military warfare and REALLY into the Roman warring periods as evident from the historical allusions.

One writer who writes completely differently from the previous games since Rance is almost too smart at times and how Rance 9 is completely lacking the character arcs of the previous games. The h scenes are repetitive and vanilla but CLEARLY different from the military stuff. And heck- Shizuka doesn't even hate Rance and says yes to sex. There's something seriously wrong here.

AND THEN- in the bad ends, particularly with Sheila and Miracle, the dialogue is so captivating and engaging that it made me both incredibly turned-on and feel empathy for the characters. Fuck me- the rest of the game had none of that.

If Dice and Dragon are in-charge of script-writing and they're vanilla dudes then who on earth writes the degenerate monster rape porn of Alicesoft that I've fallen in love with? Who do I have to thank for the torture porn of Alicesoft that exists in of now- the rape and monster rape of Evenicle amidst the plethora of vanilla porn. The murdering and torturing of the cast of Dohna Dohna whose very title is dependent on kidnapping girls to turn them into prostitutes?

But anyway... thanks. Now I know to worship Chicken. And now I know why the Rance series felt so different starting from 8. (altho VIII was pretty good in terms of story, just lacking in torture porn. What the fuck happened with 9)

It's simply 100% undiluted peak rance, the ultimate Rance. Fun, full of love, rape and excellent writing (that knows it's telling its story within a game, and not as a linear novel). The easiest way to judge this is by looking at all the subplots that seem to be important, but don't go anywhere at all. Like Yamanaka Kojika trying to restore the Amago clan in Sengoku Rance, or the fucking Hanny march towards your capitol. Stupid shit like that. It's hilarious. Needless to say, Kichikuou Rance also got plenty of that kind of shit going on, the best example maybe being the relationship and correspondence (via cute demon apostles Kaybnyan and Kaybwan) between Kayblis and Camilla. There is just nothing dumb and funny like that in IX (lame!). At all. And I thought the "hanni subplot" was long since a staple of Rance games...

There are just 3 territories/cities that make up Japan. Sengoku (clearly) expanded and improved that part of the story by a lot, and so good. The alicist church got one territory/city, there is no Crook, instead Rance will do that part himself, which is great too. The original Sachiko Centers is already here, formerly known as Mokomoko. The Kalar forest just counts as "dungeon". Rance Quest expanded and improved these parts of the story by a lot. The three big territories (other than the monster realm) in Kichikuou are Leazas (plus Free Cities), Zeth, and then Helman, which is big. And you get a really fair chunk of the whole Helman rebellion. IX doesn't add or expand much, it just fucks around, and not even in a good way.
Where Sengoku and Rance Quest took a "chapter" of Kichikuou and made it bigger and better, that's simply not the case with IX. And for this alone, as a proper IX replacement, it's worth playing already.

Finally, let's quickly talk about the gameplay. The game just throws you into the bandit phase and you will probably still be slightly confused and/or irritated by the time you make it to Leazas (at least I was, playing this for the first time). I think it's a question of expectations/mindset. The game isn't really about grand strategy or (RPG) fights, it's about decision making and also bit of a puzzler. And as such, you totally shouldn't be afraid to "save scum", that's the wrong term and mindset to begin with. I believe the idea here is to explore every single turn as much until you're content with your move, and then you proceed. This may, or may not involve reloading a few times to see what happens if you do this, or that (for example there are always plenty of options/locations available that wont do anything at all/good for you at the time, but the game will not indicate this, and your actionpoint for the turn is gone anyways...). You're just not going to beat this by simply playing turn for turn without ever looking at the options you have (which involves a fair bit of replaying the same turn). It's just part of the experience and made very clear (that it is indeed a bit of a puzzle game in this sense) once you invade the monster realm, since all demons have alternative/special ways to kill them off.

I do suggest to first read a guide, but only the parts about the game mechanics, parameters and such (there's no tutorial or anything in the game, and it might really take a while figuring out how to do a rance attack on your own...). Don't follow a walkthrough (or at least not too closely), but play it as described a bit like a puzzle game, and it should be one hell of a ride.




The really old pixel Rance games aren't that sexy, true, but Kichikuou Rance still looks splendid (and always will). The map is great. The sprites are great. The lewd images are also great (and much better, as in more competent, objectively speaking, than cheap IX pubes unless you just don't dig that older char style). Just the fights are a little bit clunky due to the lack of any animation, but they still look great, especially when Miki goes BOOOOOOOMMM, holy shit.

Oh, oh, and the Lia (and Maris) shenanigans are the best (the whole situation with Rance being King/married to Lia is just golden).
Lia alone is plenty of reason to play Kichikuou. Make sure to build that S&M tower. gahahahaha.

I've been shitting on IX for the past week I've been playing the game cos for the first time in Rance history I was actually bored playing a game and just playing it for the sake of playing and quite honestly- not having any fun.
In terms of story anyways, usually I'm pissed off by Rance due to the grinding but IX is the first time the story bored me.

I think we all (fans of Rance) have pretty much realised that Alicesoft are notorious for not giving a fuck about tutorials. Roughly.... let's see.... every single fucking game throws us into the game absolutely clueless and you just kinda figure it out as we go along.
Oh- except for Sengoku. I'm still learning new rules after multiple playthroughs.

But heck- as gamers we shouldn't rely on guides. Why google when you can discover the rules yourself? Makes it more fun that way.

its sad that we dont get to se her "for real" aside from the true ending of the last chapter but at least rance actually settle with her (and his harem of main heroines with whom he has a heir for each one).

Nah, she had to go because she was way too powerful. She's the only Kunoichi level 3 in existence. Rance is already a powerhouse to the point that nobody can stop him from committing heinous crimes. Pairing him with a slightly psychotic sex expert that supports all of his crazy antics to the best of her abilities would be too much.

Then again, Rance hasn't had a proper challenge since Xavier. That's what I'm looking forward to the most, seeing how Rance deals with the utter clusterfuck of a situation that is Rance X.
