I just started playing and damn is the prologue a complete turn off. Made me nope the fuck away instantly. I was warned about the yandere and it still was terrible and also the man hating all around is just yikes. Not the best approach in my opinion if the aim was to rid MC of any competition when it came to the girls. You're probably losing a lot of players with this prologue alone, and the yandere coming back each time and "learning and studying the MC", which is supposedly really good at taekwondo, and finally winning against him doesn't make sense. Well, good luck for you and for those that like it but I really don't think I can enjoy this.

Right, that's why I'm doing a rewrite of Season 1, because the overall negativity was a bit much for some who didn't have the stomach to sit around and watch as the situations improved. This comes from me being an author rather than a game designer, and the tendency to start stories in heavy pathos so that way when things do improve, the reader appreciates it more than just taking it for granted as the new status quo. It was meant to set up a situation in which the main character was unhappy, and through his own character arc and solving his problems one by one, he gradually begins to care about his situation more and find more happiness and joy in the girls he meets and the ways he's influencing the world. In a sense, things only get better from there. Even the seemingly man-hating Ms. Clements is starting to warm up to him in Season 2 as Aurum begins to show that he is a light in the darkness for a lot of the students.

In the 2 1/2 years this game has been live, I've learned a lot of things about the AVN community in general. One is that the AVN community doesn't get invested with heavy pathos in the way that, say, readers of the fantasy genre might in a novel. AVN players tend to come to their games and stories for a particular feeling, and disgust is not one of those feelings. And for every one person like you who speaks up about it, there are probably 10 more who are silent about it.

I appreciate you coming in and expressing your opinion cordially. It's honest and to the point, and makes me think maybe the rewrite is a bit more of a priority than I previously thought. There's a lot to love about this game if you can get past the prologue, especially once you start meeting the girls. Though if you prefer to wait till the rewrite hits and both seasons are contained within the same game, I can't say I blame you.

Anyways, always here to answer questions!

In my opinion, I do like the first reason and characters interaction, and I can not wait to play the game from the beginning (hopefully soon).

I actually mostly play AVNs for the story, so I understand your PoV as an author somewhat but the prologue just doesn't show me something I like. If there's a rewrite in the works then it makes reconsider it for sure so I'll keep this bookmarked and just wait for it because the premise is cool enough that it makes me want to give it a second chance so I'm rooting for you.

When it comes to the AVN community not liking heavy themes for the story, I don't think that's entirely true. I just think that the ones present in the prologue aren't what most people are fans of. It's very customary for AVNs to warn the player beforehand that it makes use of dark elements and advise those that aren't in a "good place" to refrain from playing it.

When it comes to it, the MC losing control/feeling helpless to that point by a crazy yandere that has no reason winning against him like that (the coming back and getting better by "studying" him doesn't convince me) or the man-hating since the majority of the public that plays it are, well, men, is probably what makes players like me not want to power through these bits to get to the good parts.

And to be honest, getting stabbed in the neck by a crazy psycho would only be vindicated, at least for me, if we could make MC outright kill her in the future, but I doubt that's the case.

I did put a pretty big warning right on the front page that indicates that I intend to rewrite the beginning. 1705780291049.png

This is the first game I've actually designed, and I made a lot of mistakes in my first year specifically as it relates to the AVN community. I appreciate you being willing to give it another chance once I've got the loose ends cleaned up.

First off, there's a certain suspension of disbelief we as authors and writers ask for in our storytelling. The suggestion that these other worlds exist. The suggestion that Cecilia's mind is abnormal, giving her clear disadvantages in some areas and seemingly inhuman advantages in others. That being said, I do think you make a good point about the first stabbing scene, and when the game was originally designed, it was meant to be a sandbox which would track how much time you spent with the other girls, and if you spent too much time too quickly, they'd end up in the infirmary. This was the design principle all the way up through an infirmary scene I won't spoil where you meet someone who has been hired to investigate what's been going on around campus.

That's when my coder left.

So with all of that left over from an old design principle that was actually going to have a time system and a tracking system and all that, I was faced with the fact that I did not know how to code all that. But I really wanted to make this game, so I said screw it, I'll just make a kinetic novel out of it and see if people at least like the story. That made it so that I had to teach myself Ren'py from scratch, and it's worth noting that the Ren'py dev community is notoriously unhelpful ("lOoK aT tHe DoCuMeNtAtIoN" is their answer for everything, if they even respond to a question at all).

The end result is that I ended up with an antagonist that had been designed for a completely different game system, who was already deeply part of the story, and who I didn't have time to go back and rewrite and reshoot all the previous scenes because I was already only delivering updates once every 4 months as it was. So I just... left it. The stabbing scene was to establish her as a real threat, and that was going to expand to the rest of the game.

And I will say that Cecilia is probably our most polarizing character. Half of the community want her dead. Half want a full redemption arc. Without spoiling, I will say that Season 2 is rapidly approaching the moment you get to decide whether or not you ever see her again. There is a fork in her path that allows you to remove her from your playthrough, though I felt she was important enough to Aurum's story not to put that fork in the beginning of the game.

Anyways, appreciate your input, and would love to have ya in the Discord.

I somehow completely missed the disclaimer about the rework so that's my bad lol.

But I get where you're coming from, so I'll definitely wait for the rework. Despite all that I've said, I still think the fantasy novel approach is a good one as I love reading books and novels in general as well, just that in this case with Cecilia, and all the setbacks you suffered with the coding and all, it didn't resonate well with the players (although again, my feedback is limited to the prologue which is what I've played through). I'll join the Discord when I get home for sure.

[PROGRESS REPORT] A Small Hiccup and Rewrite Progress

Right. So. I'm not gonna mince words. This has been a ROUGH fuggin month.

Household was swept with a flu, and temps outside dropped to 15F (that's -9.5C for you cultured people). As a result, all of my roomies and I missed a bit of work. Also had surprise vet bills for my cat, whom we almost lost to a massive UTI. And on top of that, the Patreon and SubscribeStar are at about 3/4 what I'm used to, likely because of the holidays.

Putting all that together, there's been a bit of a financial crisis, and I've been forced to take extra shifts these past few weeks, which of course results in me spending less time on the game. I apologize for that, but ey, survival comes first. I will be continuing to take extra shifts throughout the coming weeks and probably through February, so progress on the game will likely slow a bit.

HOWEVER. Despite that, I've still managed to get two key things done in preparation for the Rewrite of Season 1.

First:

The architecture for including both Seasons in the same game is built and being bugtested.

1706134266299.png

Second:

The roster organization is complete. I did a ton of work replacing the characters I mistakenly included before I had the story fully set up, and Necromedes has contributed more than a few of his wonderful designs to the updated roster.

1706134284303.png
Now all we gotta do is write 'em.

Next thing we're working on doing is delivering a Side Story-centric update. We're planning on 4 main story scenes and at least 9 Side Story scenes for you to sink your teeth into while we're working on the rest of the main story. The 2 updates following this one will be VERY main story heavy. Following that nice little cliffhanger, the rewrite and repackaging of the entire game will be our priority. It's been expressed many times that the intro to Season 1 is turning a lot of players off before they even get into the meat and bones of the game, and that's a shame. I've thankfully figured out how I'm gonna solve that issue, and identified a number of scenes that can either be cut or be spaced out to later in the season.

All I ask is your patience. I'm not sure why the Patreon and SubscribeStar funding has dropped so sharply, especially after beginning to update the game more frequently. I'm thinking it's probably due to the holidays, and hoping it's not because of the game itself. Really hope to see it pick back up so I don't need to work so much and can spend more time on WCA for y'all.

Also here. Enjoy. I post test renders in the Discord every so often, and here's the latest batch.

Until next time!

Right. So. I'm not gonna mince words as ex-friend of yours:

You're in a spiral that will lead you to either quit the project or be put "on hold" for a long time, you're saying "due to [reasons, that don't really matter on internet because you could be lying but it's not the real point the WHY a thing is happening but WHAT is happening] i'm going to spend less time on making the game" and that's bad because your updates barely get released like once every 3-4 months at best, which already doesn't bring much visibility to your game, and NOW you're telling us that your game is gonna have even less updates, which will lead to even less visibility here and on other websites, which will lead to less patreons(or more patreons/subscribers quitting) which will lead to less money and you will need more shifts at work and ultimately spend less time on developing the game...see where i'm going?

I frequent several discord servers about aVNs, unless i'm the one doing it, i never read anyone recommending your game EVER.

As ex-friend i will give you 2 advices, then i'll disappear, unwatch and ignore the thread and forget this game:

1- Stop being in so denial: your game is flawed, ACCEPT IT!, read the negative reviews and critical but negative comments in this thread. Admitting that you have a problem is the first step to fix it.
2- Memorize the first advice.

Yes, your game is kinda good but on a "i'm a decent 3stars game" level(yes the thread says that your game is rated 4stars but the thread also lacks reviews, because considering you got 29 reviews since the game was published here, it means nothing, half of the world can have played your game and got probably so bored that they quit and refused to express their opinion, also you must count for all those people who wrote a comment as a review, and i recall a few of them who aren't exactly flattering), you can't reach the actual 4stars or 5stars level if you don't begin to accept that your game is flawed and that needs some fixing...damn you're at a good point, considering that you're remaking parts of it! Just read the negative but critical(not the offensive ones then) comments and work on that, they're people who liked the game enough to spend time in giving you some criticism!

With this i'm done, goodbye <3

I feel like I kinda HAVE to respond to this. Some of this is lacking context, and some of it is accurate.

For context, the poster is someone who got mad at me because I wouldn't let her use my #other-games-spoilers Discord section to relentlessly and ruthlessly shit on other games and their creators personally, to the point where I worried that other devs might see how badly they and their games were getting shit on in my server and not want to work with me because of it. I have had people avoid me because of a single community member with a bad reputation before, and I was loathe to have it happen again in the WCA space.

And it's fairly obvious she hasn't been paying any attention since she left.

First, I'm very aware the game is flawed. That's the whole reason for the rewrite. The negative and critical reviews are what pushed me to even start a rewrite in the first place, and also to make the latest roster decisions: Moving Cecilia and River into the "Secret" category so that you have to opt-in to their content rather than be overexposed if you're not into that sort of content. Some people hated Cecilia, River, the Harpy, and Chiara in particular so badly that these characters ruined the game for them. And I listened. I'm not gonna pretend my game is some shining star of perfection in a sea of mediocrity; it's a first game. The Prologue in particular is fucking atrocious and needs the most attention. I had to rewrite the beginning of my first fantasy novel 7 times before it was fit for consumption. I'm very lucky to have gotten the amount of positive attention that I have on what is essentially still a first draft. Cecilia's mannequin scene has been cut out and moved to her private quest file, and that long ass training sequence is getting cut, too. The flashback will likely be edited, and the overall negativity and suffocating man-hating atmosphere that is driving away first time players is being toned down. All because y'all stepped up to let me know you had a problem with it. Now, obviously, I can't please everyone, but I don't want the Prologue to end up being a barrier to entry, either. That wouldn't have happened if I was in denial.

Second, the past couple of public updates were December 20th and September 21st, so yeah, there's merit to the space between updates. I've been working my ass off to try to speed up the update times by bringing on people to help me out, but they're not clones of me and each have their own working speed and content/job preferences, and I can't change that. For instance, the guy I hired on as a side story writer, BoogleDoodle, no longer wants to write. He wants to do posing. And that's fine, 'cause he's getting good at it, but he made that choice at a time when I was onboarding two people for posing lol. Soooooo now I'm back to being the sole writer, which again, slows stuff down a tad. Unmedicated ADHD is the biggest blockade in that regard, but my income is low enough now that I have state health insurance, and that's one of the first things I'm gonna try to get tackled. This is not a sprite-based game. I chose what is perhaps the most tedious method for shooting scenes, and that's on me. I made a lot of mistakes in the early days that I am continually undoing as I work on the game in the present. Once of which is swapping compression systems, which I am working on now. It involves rebuilding the entire file structure for the "images" folder of the game and mass replacing things in nearly every single reference file I've made. If I was working purely on story stuff and leaving that stuff as is, yeah, this would probably be quicker. But as it stands I have to manage my time between the Season 1 rewrite, backend systems work, and Season 2 new content, which ultimately means it takes longer for a new Season 2 update to come out... for now.

Thankfully, what this means is the Season 1 rewrite and the backend systems work have a finite amount of things that need to be done. Eventually, these two nodes of work will be finished, and all that will remain will be new content. We'll get there. Just takes time.

Which brings me to my final point. While my goal is to shorten the time between updates, the reality is that I live in America with no one supporting me, so rent and food come first. The initial release schedule ended up being 3 updates per year, which is triple what games like Light of my Life and other titles I love tend to do. And as the game gained support and earning enough to pay my rent and some of my bills, I began to transition out of my day (night) job and dedicating more time to working on it. The more money it made, the more I could pull away from my security job and dedicate time to making this. When the income sags, I have to make it up somehow, and that typically involves trading my time at either the security job or doing UberEats for that money. It's a continuum. Unless this game somehow blows up after the rewrite (I don't think it will, but I'll be pleasantly surprised if it does), it will always be that continuum. I will base the amount of time I spend working on the game on the amount of bills it allows me to pay without forcing me to sacrifice that time doing security work. People purchase a title to compensate for past work done. People support an ongoing title on SubscribeStar and Patreon style services to support future content. I understand the logic in the poster's "spiral" statement, but for me, the cause and effect are backwards.

I love this project and the AVN community I've been learning so much about, and I would LOVE for game development to be my living someday. I have so many ideas for other AVNs and projects you all might adore, but for now I only have the one game, and when income for the game sags, I have to swap my focus to more guaranteed and stable forms of income to ensure I make rent and can afford food and utilities. Some people have no idea what this is like, and that's painfully evident in their posts. And if that slows down the game, so fuggin be it. Slowdowns are temporary, and I always have vacation time I can burn to take time off of work and get paid while working on the game at home. It will never go fully on hold because I always get to dedicate at least one night a week to working on it, but survival comes first, always. Anything who tells you differently is trying to sell you something.

This game will never be Summertime Saga. I will never be DarkCookie, making over $60,000 per month. I am nowhere near as talented as that team and have no grand illusions about that. I am still, after 2 and a half years of WCA being available to the public, a VERY new game dev, and someone who HAS to be open to learning. I learn new things every day, some of which give me ideas for how to make WCA better, and imagining people's reactions and delight about these ideas excites me. WCA is my training ground, and will never be a perfect game. I accepted that a long time ago. What I'm dedicated to now is learning how to improve it, and I think that's been fairly evident in the changes I've been making.

I'll have a devlog within the next couple of weeks detailing what's going on with the S1 rewrite and the progress that's been made. A LOT of player complaints have been resolved, and I'm working with a few people to test the changes in kind of a closed alpha to get more of an idea of how a player would feel about it. I look forward to more community feedback once I'm able to put the S1 rewrite out to Supporters and then eventually the public, and see if the rewrite is sufficient for those who were initially put off to end up enjoying the intro.

That's it for now. Hope that helps explain some things.

[PROGRESS REPORT] S1 Rewrite Progress & Who is Nightblind?

Hello, all!

I decided to write this devlog a little early because of a comment on the F95Zone forum, which is perhaps where most of this game's exposure comes from. There have been a TON of people who have come forward and offered feedback, some in... less than kind ways, but the underlying message is that the Prologue is the weakest part of the game. I agree. And that's why S1 is getting a rewrite.

So what's been done so far, and what's left to do? Lemme share a Discord post with you.

Screenshot 2024-02-02 211549.png

I also have a new system brewing for Season 2, suggested by Raffael in the Discord: Love Languages. The further you get in a girl's side story, the higher chance she does something at certain points in your day. For instance, you might come to work and see that Jade left you a latte and a cookie at the security desk. Wither might catch you at your lunchtime to give you a quick kiss and send you on your way. I plan for each girl to have a primary and secondary love language, and I feel like having them pop up randomly for 1 to 2 renders during the story segments of the game may help the world feel more alive and help the player feel the impact of the girls they've chosen to spend more time with.

And now the other half of the post.

I've had a surprising amount of interest in the feedback form at the end of S1 asking who this Nightblind band is, and where they can find more of the music. The short answer is, well, it's me. There are some tracks, like Cellophane and Break the Spell where I played all of the instruments myself except the drums, and some like Hindsight and Slithering where I either purchased the license to or commissioned a backing track to sing over so I could focus on the quality of the vocals.

Nightblind started as a concept. We've all been through those periods in life where everything is shit and we're in complete darkness. Then, someone comes along who seems to be this gigantic ball of brilliant light. So you take them at surface value. But over time, as your eyes adjust, you realize that massive ball of light was really only a tiny pinprick. You fell for someone only because they contrasted with the darkness you were trapped in, and they weren't all that great after all. You were Nightblind.

I meant for this music to be kind of my personal release for things that have happened to me. It's my way of processing, accepting, and moving on, because once I commit the words, once I sing them, once I release the song, it's out there in the world and I have admitted to the world how I feel about it. In a way, it's closure. But the reason I release it publicly is because I hope someone who is just now going through the things I've been through for the very first time can hear these words and think, "Shit, I'm not the only one who understands how this feels, and this person is proof that there's light on the other side." I want all of my bad experiences to be tools in a toolbelt that I can hand to someone in hopes that it helps them navigate their new, unfamiliar situation easier. The music is out there in hopes that it makes a difference for someone.

Now, is the music good? Eh. Not particularly. I never wanted to be a professional musician, to go into the music industry and turn music into a job because I knew I could never make it in an industry so cutthroat. I wanted it to remain a hobby, to put out songs when I needed to put them out, and for those who needed them to be able to hear them and find comfort in them. So of course it's not as polished as a lot of the stuff you might hear on Spotify or the radio.

So why did I include Nightblind music references in WCA? Well, Kanako is kind of the amalgamation of a few friends of mine who DEMAND that I notify them when a new song is out, and want to know the story behind each song. And I figured with the reach WCA has, meager as it is, maybe the music will reach someone who needs it.

If y'all are interested in the Nightblind music I reference in the game, lemme know. If there's enough interest, I may make full song and lyric posts here and there between progress reports. I appreciate all the feedback, questions, and interest you've all shown, and I'm looking forward to the development of WCA into a single game.

MMMMmmmm it s seems to me you don t really understand what have to do to make a better story, sorry if i m wong...
It will not got better if you just hide things behind a choice and not really change anything in the story. it feel you just nerf the mc thinking and end to the rewrite. your game need more that just few sentence add or delet.

You want the mc in depressive stat of mind because a stalker at the start, ok why not. But a little girls can t overpower a trained adult, you have to think a little more for this, drugs, surprise effect, weapons like a taser not just she learn to fight when she fight you... How many time they fight ? 2 or 3 time it feel just stupide and lazy writing, sorry. And we don t need to see this in one bloc in the start, you can cut it in part and show it gradually to limit the impact...

But it at to get better when the player come. And for now it s not the case, your feeling are not mine.

WTF with the man hating in this game, i understand the princial, the pink hair girls but the others not really, because the princial said all the man are bad, it s really to weak excuse for all the girls to think this, they also have a live, a father, some friend before got here... (in school one of my principal not like arab people, we all now this. but you know we don t begin to hate then too, we just think she was not a good woman...), this part need a real rewrite with good reasons, your all men are pig except the mc is to much.
WTF you just stab our first li 5 min after the start and make her out of the picture for near all the rest of the game, can t we have few date before this....
WTF you get nearly kill be the stalker and you can do anything except like her and want to help her...
WTF the only friend the mc really have is a lesbian who shit on you at the start until you give her one of the li the wind elf... seriously...? he come everyone here is trash, i will be your friend not matter what... it really miss a thing here.
WTF you make our second li get old and nearly to die just after this... i m afraid to love any more girls now... who i will lost next ?
WTF you first li just after be back put you in alien invasion because of a magic book. She still one of the mc li right ? because she just dont want to spend time with you anymore. but i can t blame her becauseofthe mc she get stabed...

In other way the good with the green flower girls and the red hair irish girls are nice but clearly not enought to compensate all the shit happed. (the orc, dwarf, fairy havesoless interaction i will not put them in thegood for now)

You say it go better, so i will ask you when ? and what ?
Because for now only shit accumulates... staker and her sisiter want to hurt you, first li and the death world come to a nightmare alien invasion between world, cop girl and principal to a garbage of corrupt people and a mad scientist, goblin go to palace intrigue of power and the save of one li, etc... nothing really goodfornowto my point... and don t you think you open too much and will have a lot of way to go to close all of this...?
Your game just don t need some sentence change or choice hide scene, you need to rework scene too. That what i mean when i said your not make a full adventure story. Give your mc a break...

First off, yes, that's what a rewrite is. I am quite literally rewriting the Season 1 section of the game. Initially, I wrote this the way I would write a fantasy novel, as I have been writing books for over 20 years and I had never written an AVN. I learned since then that AVN readers don't typically enjoy the amount of pathos that goes into the setup of a fantasy novel, so I'm working on rewriting and correcting this. Fantasy novels typically have a catalyst that starts the story, called the "inciting event." Some examples include:

  • The destruction of Emond's Field by the forces of the shadow; "The Eye of the World" in the Wheel of Time series
  • The sinking of Serendair, an entire island, due to the fall of a star; "Rhapsody" in the "Symphony of Ages" series
  • The discovery of a magical kingdom on the brink of utter ruin in the absence of a ruler; "Magic Kingdom for Sale: Sold" in the Magic Kingdom of Landover series
The list goes on. These are the types of books I learned how to write from. WCA is a story with antagonists and bad things that happen, so that you appreciate the good people and the good things by contrast. It's not a story where you start out and you're perfect and everyone's perfect and all the girls fawn over you for no reason and you have a cock half the length of your body. That shit is a dime a dozen out there and if that's what you're looking for, you won't find it here. However, I've gotten a lot of feedback asking me to tone down how negative and dire the intro is, and that's what I'm working on.

Second, I would argue that things get a lot better in Season 2, which I would guess you haven't played. This thread references two separate downloadable games, which will eventually be made into one again once the rewrite is complete. The stuff you do starts making a difference. Attitudes start changing. You start seeing the effects of your hard work.

I'm not gonna try to convince you to like the game as it is. But I will tell you that it IS being reworked.

In reality, many VN players play in an immersive way. That is, we put ourselves in the MC's place, as if the story were happening to us and not to a third person we read about. So everything the MC suffers is as if we were suffering it, which makes the beginning much more unpleasant than if we were reading a novel.

Right, and that's something I've had to learn over the last couple of years. It's different when it's you immersing yourself in the story as one of the characters with a name you've chosen.

I have played a lot of RPGs, and I know that people can identify very strongly with the character they are playing. I have verified that the same thing happens with VNs and that for this reason many like to be able to choose the name to use, generally their own or some nickname they have (that usually makes immersion easier). And this makes the feelings much stronger than if you read something that is happening to a third person.

[PROGRESS REPORT] Episode 2 Complete, Working on Side Content

Hey all!

Thanks for your patience. I do manuscript and cover design on the side for other authors and I've had a couple of commissions lately that made me pause work on WCA a couple of times. But I'm happy to report that I just finished bugtesting the final scene in Season 2 Episode 2. That's right. Episode 2 is FINISHED.

Now all that remains is working through the side content that we have planned. There's been a ton of brainstorming and plot organization for the side stories, and now that we have a bunch of it pinned down, getting it planned and written is gonna be much easier. As far as progress goes, we're about 30% of the way done with the side scenes we want to include. It's all downhill from here. Necromedes has been a MASSIVE help in the planning and brainstorming department.

In other news, Necro has put together a brand new Core Promo Pinup Pack! These are images you can share of your favorite Core girls that can also help new players find the game! This pack has been posted for supporters in the Discord and will be posted soon for SubscribeStar and Patreon supporters in its own unique post. Sometime after that, I'll be sharing it with everyone on Itch and F95!

That's it for today! I'll have more for you soon as we focus down these side story scenes and get this build ready to ship. Thank you all again!
