Since she was a unit with Marcus, aka MC's dad, regardless of any other character's relation with all the other characters, she is by definition MC's stepmom.
I don't know if there is a problem with the brightness or contrast but the bow in the tutorial was impossible to see, I had to click every single tile of the house to find it, I hope this will not keep happening during the playthrough...

If Marcus is only his Guardian both Emily and Marcus are his adoptive Parents.
The Status is likely based on the fact that MC believes Marcus to be his father, I am not sure if it changes after learning that Marcus is only his Parents personal guard hiding him from assasins

Nope the letter sets their relationship and I think also activates the patch as without that IC trigger the patch has no sence anyway.
If neither of them are related to MC they are both adoptive parents... no "step" in that.
I don't know about you but the bow is rather well hidden in the shadows of the raising sun and that barrel originally it hang higher on the wall makeing it much easier to spot.
"Stepmom" at best though...
