I think the key is that some amateur writers don't understand that 1500 words is not better than 500 very well chosen words. I was a professional writer for about 20 years and learned from some great editors that great writers are very selective and thoughtful in their writing. Articles in top magazines are typically more professional (not always, of course) than those on web sites, because there's no word count limit on a web site. L&P and most writers need a good editor, or need to learn some of the basics that professional writers are taught early in their career. You can express the thoughts, the concept, the idea, the drama, in a couple of lines of well chosen dialog, and sometimes trying to do the same in 100 lines waters it down and makes it less effective.
