Maybe I've played more good VNs, but I've definitely played VNs where I felt emotions that had good foundation. At its best, Acting Lessons has some good stuff to offer and earned emotional response. Liam is the best character in this game with the most earned emotional connection and development (and I think the most real world connection for the dev, which is why Liam feels real). Melissa is good too, although she goes too damsel in distress (for me) to drive home the point that people should want to protect her. Megan and Rena are alright, a bit harder to take either of them seriously since Megan is so naive and Rena is such a backstabber but we're still supposed to like her. But still significantly better than the average porn game characters.
This game had 4 good episodes, good characters, then fell off a cliff and now needs a miracle to recover for episode 8. No shame in trying and failing, and a great first effort. However, kind of sad to see the gulf between people who are saying "2-3 stars, started off great and lost its way and here is why I think so" and "5 STARS BEST EVER". From my perspective, the people praising it so highly are maybe a bit inexperienced with good writing and good games if feeling emotions from a story is new to them and they don't see the story's flaws.
Not the same game at all but I recommend Crescendo for people looking for a better example of slice of life mixed with drama:

I recommend the nurse. Also, note the game's art style and description clearly lets players know what they're in for, no attempt to trick people (which is one of my criticisms for AL). It's old style, slower paced with more reading.
Unfortunately as this game has become more divisive, the thread has more people arguing fiercely against the internet. Reminds me of the huge debates on Telltale's Walking Dead games, like for or against Kenny. As people became more tribal, the threads became pointless. People like what they like, and no one's going to change the internet's mind by posting a lot in defense of their opinion, haha.
