There are developers who don't have business sense, a smart developer would invest the money of their sponsors in improving their equipment and in paying the right people to help them not to get stuck in things that are beyond their knowledge and / or ability.
In this sponsorship system, the sponsor is always the one who takes all the risk because the developer never returns what he has charged when he abandon a project. That is why it is the responsibility of the sponsors not to allow the developers to do what they want.
The other developers and the company itself should not remain on the sidelines because when the sponsors feel cheated by a bad developer there is a risk that they will not put their money back either on a bad developer or on a good one. The entire system would collapse if the sponsors stop putting their money into these projects.
That is why the main responsibility falls on them. They are the ones who have the duty to demand that the developer progress in his work and if he does not do so, remove the sponsorship.
But according to my way of seeing things, because of the bad practices of a few developers they end up harming everyone, I think that the other developers should not remain on the sidelines and neither should the company.
To the sponsors who still trust these developers, I can only say that "it's your money and you can do whatever you want with it" but stay tuned and be realistic, no one who works on something seriously can go a year without getting or showing a progress, much less three years, it's really not serious or credible no matter how many excuses you get from that developer.
You have to understand that either he is not working, or he is not investing well the money that you give him.
