One year per update is not something to be encouraged at all, but I must say this particular update was incredible. Still don't quiet get the whole picture story-wise, but pretty much everyone, including both the player and the in-game characters, got what they wanted and more. I hope the ending doesn't disappoint.

I can't seem to play the update because the game just shows me a couple tasks from last update and afterwards saying "processing complete" as if I have completed the new content

I save the game and when I come back it's the beginning again.

Saving occurs at the beginning of a certain scene. Therefore, it seems to you that you are starting over.
