The problem is Sage got invested in the relationship, on the surface Chad is the perfect guy for most college girls, good looking, strong and confident, while Chad (for obvious reasons) didn't get invested in it.
That's why Chad didn't break up with Sage until after he was removed as president of the jocks, technically the politics would have Dawe and Sage being an item now, but as Dawe is with Arieth that's not an issue right now.

If you see Sage back in the flashback, a few years back, she comes across a lot more naïve, definitely the Sage we know now is more mature (in some ways).
But I believe she would have been a loyal girlfriend. She was not actually looking for a fuckbuddy, and only fell into the mc's arms after she was convinced of Chad's unfaithfulness and enough was enough. For how long she put up with Chad's BS we don't know, but she reached her breaking point at the time the mc came into her life.
I don't really see what's so hard to accept.
