in my eyes its just expanding the game , and added drama for the sake of drama
look how big this game is already - and not one conclusion to one "case"

the discovery of Tommy is unlikely to advance the story, the general one. the relationship with Maya and Josy is a confidential matter but not a secret (Derek, John boy and Elena in fact already knew and the 3 of the trouple did not do much to hide in general, and at this point not only Tommy, but almost all the DIKs "know"), so that sooner or later it would become known at least within the circle of friends is inevitable.

I repeat the only major effect Tommy's intervention can have is to generate a game over for the trouple in certain situations, otherwise I don't even see the unnecessary drama, but a more or less linear continuation

Well, we will deal with it when it happens. Real life is just like this, and dramas is the only thing still keeping this thing alive. There is no end to a drama.

I just don't see any motive for the Senior Burgmeister to spy on his son's fraternity.
Officially, this character was not even introduced, which is a pity. I had a theory that it was that cheerful bearded man from the preps party, he behaves like a Burgmeister. But he's talking about his daughter, so it doesn't add up.
