He likely cut her off financially forcing her to get tuition by other means. Josy doesn't seem to have suffered the same problem and hasn't been ostracized by her family. So if she's well off like Tommy, she could end up helping Maya with money.

Maya I can’t see doing the final act but for the story the struggle will be there for us and our feelings for Maya. As for Derek he already is will to sleep with a male teacher (not seriously I hope) and probably wouldn’t be adverse to be pimped out to get some action
