Well the thing is that this game probably have some of the most detailed renders that have yet to be thrown into this sort of adult VN. Think of the stark contrast between the first and later episodes. That requires a lot of time, especially the animations. Then you throw the goddamn mini-games on top of it all and things begin to sprawl.

Animations can end up taking less time than individual scenes... but a lot of it depends.

For example, even on my old decaying potato of a computer, I can render 7000 frames of HD video at 24 fps (which yields a 5 min video clip) in Blender using the Evee engine in roughly an hour, give or take. But if I have to do 7000 individual scenes for different events, that could take weeks or a couple months because its not the render time but the amount of time it takes to set up each scene. Then is it one long animation vs 100 shorter animations... you get the idea. But then there's the "it depends part" if a lot of those scenes are using the same characters and assets and all I need to do is tweak poses and such between renders, I'm back to render time being the bottleneck because small changes don't take a lot of time.

So... depending on how well you plan your scenes with your story so you can reduce the overall work, you could speed things or bog things down. There's a whole lot of "it depends" in this.

If you wanna make a game where the non pursued LIs essentially disappear from the game, then you’re also in a sense going to be making x amount of de facto separate VNs right? Because I would assume you’d still want to make a long and reach experience for each LI right? The end result of that is another massive game, possibly even bigger than this one which will take ages for a single individual to do.

Sorta yes, I think it comes down to how many LIs you have x the amount of content for each as a rough formula. So for example Nicole is a secondary LI and doesn't have a lot of content compared to Sage. Josy and Maya share some content but also have individual content so thats what... a 1.5 LI factor? I think if you had one with 5 main LIs with similar levels of content for each main LI, it'd be smaller because you don't have Zoey (a late 6th LI... maybe, I dunno) and you don't have all these secondary LIs like Quinn and Camilla and Nicole who add a lot. But, if I made a game with a similar number of secondary LIs... it'd probably end up about the same more or less. So... we're back to "it depends" LOL

But I appreciate the discussion cause it makes me stop and think and I'm learning here and that helps me.

Since this got brought up, and to try and steer away from just drooling over Bella (although you guys can keep posting lewds of her, I won't complain ), if this really was someone spying on us and not just a creative camera angle, I wonder why it hasn't come up yet.

Combined with someone outside MC's window that one night, the laptop business, and maybe Jamie's missing phone, there's quite a bit of treachery going on in the DIKs mansion by a person or persons unknown. If it's the nerds, why hasn't MC gotten a letter himself? If it's whoever is behind the Cathy Cluck (if that wasn't also the nerds), this is 1000x more inflammatory than that ever was, it would ruin Bella, but it hasn't been used against her yet. Doubt it's the dormies, or Vinny, or James and if it is someone with malicious intent, would there be corresponding blackmail material for the other 4 girls? What is the equivalent to this for Sage, Maya, Josy and Jill?

Lots of unanswered questions, but I know one thing for sure... they'll regret trying to hurt any of my girls, especially my baby

The scene with Bella is at a point of view from somebody peeking from the back of the house side of the window. The later scene with the lights dimming, is somebody moving from the front towards the back of the house. So it's almost like somebody catches as their sneaking away from the back door, and then later sneak back in through the back door a little later on. If it is a DIK then Jacob, Jamie, JB, Nick, and Rusty all have quick access to the back door from their rooms.

The first thing that comes to mind for corresponding blackmail for Josy and Maya would be similar as Chad's, outing their relationship together. But nothing pops in my head for Sage and Jill so I'd need to think more on them.

Branching is the key thing, and how inter-woven are the stories of the LIs. If each is more or less separate (unlike in BaDIK) then it seems this sort of branching would be much easier to do, you could drop an LI and they could essentially virtually disappear while the MC/player focuses on another LI instead.

Yeah, making characters independent of each other is one way of taming the combinatorial explosion.

Until and unless we get AI capable of reliably generating satisfying narratives in response to player choices, we're looking at everything being made by developers, and cutting down the number of variations required is key to keeping things manageable.

If a game has just ten binary (A or B) choices, then that's over a thousand possible variations if each possible combination leads to a different outcome. On the other hand, if you can address each individual choice's consequences independently, then you can break those outcomes into ten scenes, each of which has two versions, for twenty scenes, or two full outcomes' worth (though it'll be more work than just making two of the thousand outcomes since you'll have to also make the framework to stitch them together, and put in some work making the scenes interchangeable). Or you can reduce things still further by adding the choices together and, say, showing one scene if the player picked A more than 6 times, and the other if they picked B more than 3 times.

Of course, the problem with making characters too independent of each other is that you then end up with what amounts to entirely independent stories that happen to be being told interspersed through each other. It can be okay, but you lose a lot of storytelling potential, and the world can feel a bit artificial, when you can date any combination of girls without any of them acknowledging your activities with any of the others...

Figuring out where to make that trade-off is one of the big decisions for an AVN.
