The biggest problem is that no matter how many opinions you get on story changes, you cannot please everyone. So you have just as much chance of people not liking your story if you don't make changes, than if you do; so it's better to stick with what you, as the author, would want to make it, and let those that don't like it go elsewhere. As I already said above, the silliness in this case, was even though people complained that Eric ruined the game for them, it was still massively popular, and it had become massively popular, with Eric there, so it was pretty obvious that the dev was making good decisions already.
