Yesterday I tried Free Cities once again: the lack of art isn't encouraging, the management could have been much simpler, so I don't feel like it can be compared to BK, they are too different.

Starting from 0.14 there's a love/trust cap depending on girl rank, so you will see them raising until that limit and need to rank up the girl before they can raise further. I'm waiting for 0.15 official release for the walkthrough update 'cause there are so many things that I myself haven't seen them all so far!
in my opinion i don`t understand how to play free cities at all.
sfp is good but when you are at certain stage you will feel boring.
try whore master and pythfall if you are not try yet.they can make their own girls pack like brothel king

The game keeps having Sill's head next to the "character" button, telling me that I'm ready to level up. (Currently a level 3 trader with 61 prestige). But even though I've collected more than a total of 1000 gold, I still can't upgrade the brothel. Is there some button I'm missing?

Sill's head next to "Character" means that MC is ready to level up and you can spend a new point for MC stats. If you see Sill's head next to "Girls" it means some of your girls can level or rank up. Brothel doesn't have any level up, you simply buy rooms and furnitures as long as you have money to spend.

Let me exploit this time of standstill (Goldo's on vacation for another 10 days or so) to remind you that we're having a little contest related to Brothel King, called BK Best Girl 2019. Anyone can vote for 3 different girls, no matter if they have a girl pack or not, they can also be game's NPCs, the important thing is that the 16 most voted girls will get into the final stage, where there will be pairs matches decided by users votes. Goldo has returned and is preparing the final 0.15 version. During this week, very few bugs emerged and the last events to be added are ready, I think it will be ready during this week.

Assuming you are referring to the girl who makes improvements for your brothel, not where you collect wood- After examining the "???" item on the brothel screen, head to the Warehouse district, then to the Gallows location and explore there.
