He took the easy way out. I pity every patreon that supported DMD so far. All over the years, people paid him so much money and in the end, just when things began to pick up in episode 2 he just gives up. Very convenient.

The only reason people supported him so far was that he promised them specific things. And now at first sign of trouble, he throws in the towel and disappoints all his supporters instead of doing everything he can to deliver what he promised them all over the years.

Wanna bet the new game will also take at least 1.5years of development before there's any sex scene.

As one of his $20 patrons I always felt I was paying him for the work he had completed each month. Every month I gave him $20 and every month he gave me content with bonuses. So I don't really feel cheated. I got exactly what I paid for each month.

And to be fair, this wasn't his first sign of trouble. This situation began at the end of last year and he tried to work around Patreon. It failed.

So you can keep your pity. I don't need your validation when it comes to how I spend my money.

As an aside, Graphtreon is amazing and we support them for $50 a month because they are just downright awesome! And their customer support is fucking top-notch!

Honestly Mr.Dots is being a bit too conservative with this, he has a product that people want, DmD is one of the most popular/lucrative games on Patreon. Now Patreon kick his balls with their banhammer and what's he gonna do? Take his project to another platform? No, he will submit to Patreon and start some random project that nobody asked for.
There were erotic games before Patreon, there are erotic games outside of Patreon, and yes, they got money too, stop being a coward and say fuck you to Patreon random rules.

Actually before Patreon western devs were creating erotic games as a hobby as even the most popular devs like Goblinboy weren't able to gather decent funds out of it. Except for a few site-focused devs of small games like LoP or Pussoy no one was and no one is able to keep funds outside of Patreon for a multiple of reasons. Gumdrop (Dual Family) said on his discord he has different site and it's gathering some attention but it's nothing in comparison to Patreon when it comes to income. Saying fuck you to Patreon is like saying fuck you to erotic games development at all at this point.

This scenario--a phoenix rising up from the ashes--defies credibility.
These VNs have only become popular recently mainly due to taboo themes. Daz improvements helped as well.
To now eliminate that "magic" taboo ingredient and to keep those patrons, as you note, isn't likely.
But a new, 2nd wave, list of patrons are more than likely to have read reviews from the 1st wave and have come to see what the fuss was about. They too will be disappointed.
Without positive reviews, the immense power of testimonial advertising, "vanilla" VNs will plummet in popularity.
Of course, I'm assuming Patreon will be an obstructive, malignant force in the foreseeable future.

I am going to respectfully disagree here. If we are just talking about Patron count, of the top five adult game developers only two have incestuous themes, Summer Time Saga and Daughter for Dessert. This ratio doesn't change much as you move into the top ten or even the top twenty.

It's marketing problem, plain and simple. And if Dots starts thinking like a business man and considers this problem seriously, I don't see why he rise above this thing.

I myself have only been into adult VN's for about six months. Prior to that, I had no idea these things even existed. I absolutely refuse to believe that I was the last person on board this train. I think it's more likely that because of a lack of mainstream advertising, a large segment of the population that would enjoy and even pay for these games, is simply unaware of their existence.

Given that proposition, I also believe it very credible that just like mainstream porn, the taboo subjects occupy a subset of the larger porn viewing community (I am making an assumption that the percent of the porn watching population that enjoys taboo themes holds constant for games as well).

As a dev, we've been studying the marketing aspect of this extensively. The wider the net we can cast, the better our future prospects. But it is a challenge reaching new customers in this niche market. It's just a matter of drawing in new players and widening that customer base.

What DMD had was an implausibly quick MC "heel turn" into accepting the possibility of incest. Plus, repeated chances for touching/groping because F/D were together so much.
If Melody has an MC--who presumably has known many groupies--who wants to avoid intimacy and there are fewer chances to indulge, the girl would have to corrupt the MC rather than the other way around. That could take some doing...

With dmd though, they didnt know each other, so essentially she is already 18, she hasnt had those paternal love instincts instilled, so she is meeting some man, the feelings she develops can go either way, its pretty common among estranged family members, its genetic sexual attraction

If you carefully go over DMD 0.01 and 0.02, you'll find that these ambivalent feelings in the F/D relationship have been resolved. The "normal" F/D relationship is to be picked up where it was dropped off.
F has to fight off how physically attracted he is to D's beauty but is doing so. NO, his subsequent "heel turn" was ABRUPT...

You are right more people should try 0.0.1 to see how different was D back there.
