It's in the walkthrough exactly what you need to do, including the contest. On my play-through D/F won first place.

You're almost certainly missing the info you need (in game) to win. Check out Day 8 in the walkthrough.

I'm not sure, I only know the .a .b etc is for bug fixes.

Yes, those are Xianne and Sophia from Melody, entering the same restaurant as D and MC on Day 35 of DMD.

Correct, on Day 19 after the fireworks, the group goes into a club and you can see Arnold and Amy (from Melody) sitting together, with a sign about Melody performing there the next day.
