Because the light also reflects off the environment on to the figures.
When rendered separately won't the light act differently?
you used a Hdri as light or?
then blend the environment out and draw dome out then it should work
i do this sometimes..

or use scene optimizer to reduce the textures :)?

Most of the time I have Hdri with a few added lights for accents or fill.
I use camera view optimiser to delete or hide assets that fall outside the camera view.
When you render the environment and models separately do the characters still cast a shadow on the scenery when merged?

normally they have shadows yes
i really can recommend Scene Optimizer to reduce the Textures it helps a lot not everytime is a 8k or 4 k map a needed

I'm not using 8k maps for anything yet. Even 4k is a bit overkill for me.
This is potatosquad you're talking to. I use lower end maps on backgrounds and hide the lack of detail in the DoF (which I like better over sharp throughout anyway) I have a GPU but it doesn't even come in to play to render Daz scenes, it all runs over CPU anyway.

not even for the Hairs? hairs have sometimes 8 k maps
u can set the render quality to 950 or higher and a lower Converged Ratio :)
i do this i render over Cpu too
