Alright, I know this is long overdue and even now I'm trying to scramble it out so I can get back to work.

There has been a lot happening this last month and I'm feeling very optimistic. A lot of things have changed, so let's just dive right in.

What's Changed?

Demand at the real job has been on the rise and they are throwing more salary at me than I can say no to. This of course further drives a divide into the idea of ever making the Doctor Amana game full time because it'll take years for Patronage to ever surpass what my job is paying me. But that doesn't mean I'm done making the game. Far from it. It's just required an adjusted mindset which I've spent last month developing and will spend this month testing.

The Headspace

My mentality up until this point has been all about how to make this game alone. Where can I automate, what can I optimize and how much can I just get done! So far it's worked and we've implemented a number of time saving processes in terms of coding and image processing. Unfortunately moving forward this isn't going to be enough. I'm already severely delayed on the next release and as each week sees less and less time devoted working on the game, the delays have become untenable. Right now I'm only averaging about eight to ten hours a week on the game and this just simply isn't going to do.

The original question was, "What can I automate and trim to make development faster?" It was a good start. But now I've reframed the issue and the new question is, "How can I produce a single completed chapter in 25 to 30 hours?"

If going forward I am able to put in one to two hours a day on the game with possibly three or four on the weekend, with a 20 to 30 hour turn around I would be producing a single chapter every two weeks.

[(1.5 hours x 5 days) + 3.5 hours] = average of 11 hours a week, 22 every two.

That needs to be the new goal!

The Task

With this new target in mind I started tearing apart my development process. I continued to produce but at this point I began timing how long specific tasks are taking. What is my overall average development speed and where can additional time be ruthlessly cut?

As I began mining the processes I began to identify places where additional efficiencies could be obtained. (I may do a separate series of posts going into some of the more clever places I was able to shore up time but I'm trying to keep this post on point.) Now, for what it's worth, I think I'm close and I'm ready to spin up the machine and see if we're close to the mark.

October?!

My goal for the month of October is to test this new process and see how fast new content can be spun out. To determine the viability of it, I need to start two chapters from scratch and see how long they take to produce. Since I already have several chapters queued up for reworking, I want to start with those. This will give me a good baseline to determine if any additional changes or cuts need to be made.

The goal is to produce faster, with no deterioration in quality (perhaps even some improvement).

The Truth

My real job may be sucking up all of my time these days, but that doesn't mean I'm any less interested in this game. Fact is, I've spent too much to time learning Reny, Daz, Blender, Substance and a whole slew of other skills to produce this story. I'm not going to let all that training go to waste.

Plus, I'm in love with these characters and I want to continue working with them.

After struggling to keep this game going for so long, giving up would be such a devastating blow that I don't want to bear. Besides, I'm not sure I could. If I told you today that I was canning the game and it was abandoned, it would simply haunt me. Because these characters are always in the back of my mind. They're stuck in my head demanding a place on the screen. So yeah, I couldn't stop now even if I wanted to.

But rather than say, 'I'll work when I can and it'll be done when it's done.' I want to build a plan of production that works within my other commitments and allows me to kick out better and faster than ever.

It's a struggle finding that balance. But now that I'm looking at this production problem from a different angle, I've put together some things that I think will help.

Let's take October to find out!

I'll use the new process, make a couple of chapters and then you can decide if it's on par with what you've come to expect of the game so far.

Here's to hoping I can do you proud.

Salute!
Is always good to see devs so motivated, even though they have to deal with real world obligations Im glad and honored you get to spend part of your days providing us with such memorable story and characters

Actually this is one of the rare games where the dick looks normal - sorry haven played the game for a while - my point about the color is still valid.
I don't disagree with you, but some days my sarcasshole goes off before I can stop it. XD

no hard feelings (no pun intended) - somehow the point I was making turn into dick measuring... of course I gave a wrong example yet the huge dick games are the norm and I bet the folks on this thread have no problem playing such MC.

What "huge dick games"? I always get told this game or that features it. Then I look at them - and most don't even have two feet of donglengthiness. That's Pygmy sized. ;)

Well that was.. interesting, to say the least. Anyone know where I can find the songs used in this version? A few seconds of searching didn't yield any info so I gave up.

Ah. Donglengthiness. Quite an impressive renaissance vocabulary, I see. A word first introduced and significantly popularized in Shakespeare's "Measure For Measure." Only brought back in the time of Longfellow, before finally resurfacing now in a porn-game chat forum. I see you too are a man of great culture.

(Sadly there was no monocle and tophat emoji).

there is a cool app in Android called Shazam , you can turn it on while the music is playing and it will try to search the song for you...

Best solution is to just go into the game files and pull the MP3's. All the tracks are from a royalty free site I buy music from, so I don't know if you'll find any of those songs on any popular platforms like Spotify.

Definitely a challenge to find songs that haven't already been used by three or more developers already. It jarred me out of immersion when I encountered one of the songs I associated with Summertime Love on another game from another developer.

I actually tried this (Shazam) with some games - after all, it helped my dad identify some 1940s songs he somehow had on cassette (look up what that is kids) - but minor royalty free stuff more often than not gets either a "did not recognize" or some random suggestion of a Polish 1920s Jazz hit - or similarily off the mark.

One song I could identify from this game was by Luftmensch.

Vast majority of these games - being on a shoestring & pocket lint budget - are getting the same free songs, models, ect., from pirate forums for Das3d and Renpy such as this one. It's pretty incestuous... also like a vast majority of these games.

I find it fun when a tune used in one of these adult games ends up on broadcast TV as a music bed in a public service announcement. "Why am I getting aroused while they berate me about animals dying in a local shelter?" "WHY?" "Dammit, ME!"

But is there a control experiment though? Like, did you ever test it to see if you get the same reaction on mute?

Character Poll.jpg
2021-10-07 Poll Information

I'll keep this short and sweet.

As previously stated, I've spent the last several weeks retooling the production process to adhere to a 2 hour a day max work flow.

Starting on Tuesday I began working with this new model and so far things have been clicking along great.
To test the process, I've been reworking old material. We've been scheduled to do this for some time in order to bring v1.1.5 into the v2.0.0 framework. I opted to start with old material because the scripts are written and all they required was code notation and artwork. So using this old material in this way would be a good base line for what producing new chapters will look like going forward.

That said, I have spent the week so far working on Nanami Chapter 01. With only about 2 hours a day I've succeeded in completing more than half of the material required for release. That said, if we continue to track this way, that chapter will be ready by mid next week and will have only taken 7 days to complete. That's the goal and so far our trim looks good.
Before calling this new process official and making it the default format going forward, I want to run it against a couple of other new chapters as well. This will give us a good idea whether or not a two week turn around per release is viable and maintainable.

Since I have so much material already written for various characters, and since I want to make supporter polling on new content part of the process, I figure running a poll for the next text case would be a solid way to test this next round.
For character's we've seen, this vote will be to rework their chapter 1 material. For characters we haven't, this will be their chapter 1 introduction. Either way, it's new/semi-new content all around and it will help us determine what other process improvements may be required to hit that two week turn around.

Supporters can vote for more than one character (I won't make you choose favorites), and the character with the most votes by next Tuesday will be up for the next two week cycle.

Once the current chapter is ready, I'll release a playtest and once we have two characters in the bucket we'll make an official release and hopefully be seeing at least two new characters a month going forward.

So let me know who we want to work on. All the female characters are available and I have story ready for each of them! Have a ball! or two, or three...whatever.

Cheers!
