Was he doing it by himself? or did someone who was key to make it suddenly left and he didn't have the skills or time to continue it?This guy could have just kept doing what he was doing and made so much more money. Doesn't even make sense to do this.
Would he really make more money? this game is way too simple to capture people's attention for over 2 years (patrons are clinging to expectations and fake promises, which wouldn't work if the actually released game contradicted all of it). Big games usually are more complex (open world-ish or with more characters and branching). Successful creators who create simpler games usually finish them relatively quickly and move on to new or more complex ones (e.g. the guy from Areas of Gray, or the guy from Acting Lessons).
How much work did he do to make thousands from scamming people for over 2.5 years vs. how much work would he have done if he hadn't actually scammed? the difference in work is massive, but the difference in profits wouldn't be as big. 10k was already near saturation point for such a simple game like this.
