Weekly Update #70 - The future of Esteria
Hello! It's time a weekly update! Don't mind the title, Esteria is not getting abandoned, it was just for dramatic effect. Today, I will spend much of the time talking about Esteria and what you can expect to see when it returns, after Family Faring.
So, before we begin let's get Family Faring out of the way. The development is going smoothly, just got done with two animations and preparing another. Along with 70 new renders this week. Though, I still can't clearly say when it'll be ready for release. It's taking a little longer than usual, but it's probably halfway done now.
Now as for Esteria. Esteria is a project very dear to me, and one I want to take my dear time with. While I will only begin development of Esteria once Family Faring is completely done, I still have plenty of plans for the universe in the meantime. Though, I'm currently focusing all of my energy on episode 5, I will delve into the Esteria content you can expect later. I wanted to write this post, because my vision for Esteria has changed somewhat while developing Family Faring. There are certain aspects of the game that are too poorly thought out, and parts that are simply too ambitious for one guy or even a small team. So let's use this week to delve into what plans I have for Esteria.
The first thing I want to change is the entire prologue, that is chapter 1-5. While that may take a long time at first, we are talking about around 7000 lines of script and around 1500 renders, there are parts of the story that are very lackluster. The renders of Esteria are also using techniques I learned about 2 years ago, so there's a lot of room for improvement. While the story is acceptable right now, there are parts that need expanding. Not to mention the entire plot, which is not even properly explained. Some of you probably do not even know who the bad guys are, which is not your fault, but my poor writing. You can also expect some backgrounds and story for the companions to change. So, yes, the first release of the new Esteria will take quite a while.
Secondly, I have made too many unnecessary decisions. While I like meaningful decisions, I have left too many for it to be fulfilled satisfyingly. Certain choices like the four lifestyles, the companions, etc. are too much to handle. Instead, my plan is to incorporate all lifestyles, and include all companions in the story. Though, it would be cool to choose which companions to take with you, having that choice for every companion, along with the 7 possible romances with said companions... Well you can probably guess that is way too much. So, instead of adding a bunch of unnecessary choices, I want to bring choices that feel more heavy on the story.
I think the story so far is fine. However, there are a lot of parts that I chose not to delve into, as I feared it would be too dark or stray away from the porn aspect. That is going to change. Esteria will have a lot of explicit content, but I want to use that explicit content as an advantage for storytelling. Previously, I only used sex scenes as quick jerk-off material, and while it should still be possible to use it for that, I want to be tell a story. I want to tell a meaningful story, and hopefully have you say "Came for the porn, stayed for the plot". So, parts like gender issues, sexuality, gore, death and disease will be explored a lot more. While it might be too much for some, I want this story to be unique. I want players to feel bad for making a bad choice and feel good for making a difficult one. That might stray a bit away from the ordinary porn games, but it can show people that porn can be used for more than just pleasure.
All things considered, the story will change a bit, choices will be fewer but more meaningful. It'll be a little different from the first edition, but I'm hopeful and only time will tell if my vision for Esteria is the right one. I want Esteria to be the flagship game of Royal Games and hopefully it will eventually feel like it. While you shouldn't expect Esteria to return anytime soon, I will be redoing the worldbuilding articles and finally getting around to releasing that comic I promised months ago.
