Would be a worrisome scenario if some projects are halted, or abandoned altogether after this announcement. Wonder which people or company will pick up the pieces (and how much this will force some indie developers to change their current development plans, and if Caribdis will create contingency measures once he learns of this). Just a humble opinion from my part.
So does this means no more HS games anymore in the future?
My absolute hope is that...nothing happens. No CnDs from the company or person who gets the rights for the software assets (assuming they get sold), no Patreon or Subscribestar announcement that they will be fucking devs over because they have issue with seeing people profit over work on a "dead" software. Life just goes on and the community is allowed to continue with their work...even if the software itself eventually becomes unwieldy thanks to new hardware and new operating systems (like even now you see people complaining about being able to run stuff like HS2 at a steady 60fps for one reason or another) and that it's mandatory that you sail the high seas in order to acquire it.

Okay, I have no idea how this whole system works. Do they need Illusion to trade assets for example?

My guess is that Illusion either allowed or ignored people using their game Honey Select's assets to make scenes for visual novels, although apparently AVNs made using it can't be sold on Steam, so probably "ignored" is more accurate.

Unless someone else buys the rights to HS and starts cracking down, the only thing it would mean is that the original program would no longer have any official support tech-wise, although it also sounds like there's tons of mods out there, so the modders might keep supporting it. New devs would have to either buy the program in the next 3 weeks or grab it from somewhere like, well, here, to use it in the future.

The real issue would be if someone does buy the rights and starts cracking down on people using it to make their visuals, like this game, My New Family, Ripples, etc. It would probably prevent them from monetizing their games on the currently-available sites ... maybe they could continue by removing all evidence of the actual games from those places, but it would make it hard to find any new players without directing them to the Patreon/Subscribestar/etc. from, again, places like here.

Patreon is a bit of a loophole. In the case of this game and others like it you are simply supporting an artist. The artist just happens to publish their art for free - I am probably misremembering this but there was a bit of a drama a few years ago when fakku (who have the rights to the international version of HS) tried to come after Runey the Harem Hotel dev. I dont know the specifics but the outcome was that he could publish his game on patreon but not sell it on steam. In this case you are not buying a product. Eternum is a free game available to everyone its just that supporters will get access to it first as a perk. It is not being sold to anyone. The reason Eternum cannot be on steam is because unlike patreon you will be selling the game there and thats not allowed.

Thats my understanding of it anyway. I do not think HS/Koikatsu games will be impacted by this.

Hope you're correct.

it's over
and to think that Illusion assets were purposely made as hard as possible to acquire in the west
wonder if piracy was the real reason, considering the company pushed everyone outside japan towards it

Replaying the game is really cool to see how good MC is Orion. In a lot of AVN the MC is just a potato with a big dick, with zero personality and passive as fuck, things just happen to him, yadda yadda and sex scene. But Caribdis is really good making characters that feel alive, like real people, and Orion is not an exception. One simple example is the chill out moment in the park some days after the Calypso situation: Orion is chilling in the park and Dalia appears because she and Alex are going to the pool. Dalia comments that she prefer a low impact exercise because she is worried about his back before the competition, and the next texts are:

Orion: The competition is next Thursday, right?
Dalia: Yep! Thursday at 05:00 PM, at Kredon's gym
Orion: Nice. I'll be there.
Dalia: Are you participating?
Orion: Well, maybe, but I'll probably make a fool out of myself. I'm mostly going to cheer you on. I'm allowed to do that, right?
Dalia: *Chuckles* You sure are!
Yvier: I'll be your loudest fan, I promise!

In just one minute Orion is proving that he listen her problems, that he cares about her, ask for consent (he doesn't try to impose himself) and promise to be here, because if is important to Dalia is important to him.

In other games this interaction is just a two option text to win points to fuck the girl, but in Eternum is just Orion being a good friend because he really cares about Dalia, and yes he wants to pound her like the horny teenager he is, but for him is most important support her because he believes in her, because he loves her, and I really like a MC like that.

Yes, Alex/Axel scene is my first hilarious scene. And Nancy/The Emperor is second hilarious too.
