Do compressions lower the quality of the image or what I am seeing is the normal quality even in the original 1.4GB folder ?

Compression will lower the quality to some degree, that is the trade-off. I usually download the compressed versions of the games when they are available, and I find the images to be fine.
Your results may vary - download the full size one and compare. That way you will know which you prefer.
