I doubt they care, or that most people supporting the mod are aware of what is going on, or what the final product will be like. It wouldn't be the first time this happened with a Patreon/Kickstarter project.Well, you will have to wait and see how it turns out upon release. It's their hard earned reputation at stack and if I were them I wouldn't risk it. We all know what happened to 2077.
Hell, I can even predict what is going to happen if they manage to crawl their way to EA on Steam. People will see the game and the nice models and animation, buy it, fire it up and then ask themselves where the porn is, only to discover that it's completely disconnected from the game itself and relegated to a pathetic gallery viewer, and if the devs are dumb enough to put the MP-only content as promotional material, they'll piss people off more when they also discover that many characters and features are locked behind a mandatory multiplayer mode you have to suffer through with total strangers - because that's totally not awkward and embarrassing enough for most people.
Sure, according to their story they're doing the multiplayer because an investor, who is giving them the mo-cap studio in Japan requested it after seeing the game and liking it - which sounds totally plausible. After all, people with the money to finance that kind of infrastructure want to advertise their bestiality fetish for all the world to see.I'm pretty sure the publisher is forcing their hands or swayed them in a way, come to think of it. All the fancy ideas about harem mode popped up after PH declared that they received Yostar and dlsite's support.
And even if that story were true, the publisher wasn't the one that forced them to shift the near complete focus of the project towards the multiplayer portion of the game, or to make the majority of the new content multiplayer exclusive, or to introduce in-game currency. That's all on them.
You mention Cyberpunk 2077, and this project has all the hallmarks of another aimless mess sold on hype and a prayer, right down to the constant changes in direction, scope and content.
People are angry because they can see all the potential of the game being pissed away.
And don't get me wrong, I'm not against a multiplayer mode for the game, the more features it has the better for all I care - what I'm angry about is that they're deliberately gimping the singleplayer to prop up the MP, and then doubling down by gutting the singleplayer even further - and all because they want to sell premium currency to people and are actually deluded enough to think a game with a bestiality focus, sold on a platform where people can see what you're playing, is gonna gather the necessary number of continuous users to sustain it for years to come.
