I don't self insert but find that often with ntr the wrightig takes a nose dive and the tone changes to be spiteful and mean toward the player and not the character. It's a strange pattern that I've noticed in vns and other media, often with a "moral" of you made this happen through your inaction. With that being the case, especially in a vn where the author makes the decisions with the illusion of player choice, I can understand why people would not like ntr situations. In real life if a girl cheats on you you can tell her off or beat up the guy, you never get that choice or opportunity in most vns, which further drives home that the author is trying to create a weak powerless character which is something most people don't want to read about because they can't understand or emphasize with it. I see ntr as an extension of misery porn, because that's what it is.
There is, indeed, a lot of issues with writing in many AVNs. Any one can pick up a pen, but not everyone can write poetry, as they say. Over use of tropes. Bad archetypes. Pacing is all off. Just a general observation and not an insult, naturally, to the authors out there. The biggest gripe I have that is prevalent in far too many AVNs is use of the "willfully blind" MC. No matter if they are, not so, intelligent or a genius. They cannot connect the dots. That, particular, trait should be used in rare circumstances. However, it seems to be rampant in many characters. Used to keep the plot alive, and moving, because it is easy to do.
If you, me, or anyone else here were plopped into an AVN, we could probably resolve most things by the middle of the second episode, is all I am saying.
Nice conversation, this - pseudo cathartic.
