Oh, so the bit in rule two about diagonals counting doesn't modify rule one?
The interaction between the two is baffling me! What is the point of allowing a diagonally connected branch if it doesn't count towards the unbroken whole?

Those two rules aren't in conflict though. Looking back at the rule's wording, perhaps I should have worded it better. Diagonal touching cells don't count as branching. They are "allowed" in that they don't count as touching, in that they don't form loops. They don't allow branching in this way. See below for some examples.

It is allowed for cells to touch diagonally in that they don't form a loop when touching diagonally. Cells are only considered "touching" if they touch along an orthogonal edge. Therefore cells touching diagonally are neither (1) connected into a single area, nor (2) forming a loop.

Let me add some images to illustrate what I'm saying. This is just a random path I drew, setting aside all the other rules types. We're just looking at the first two rules here, about a single connected area and about loops.

f95_example_1.png

Imagine connecting all the orthogonal cells with lines:

f95_example_2.png

You can see in the above connected image that all the cells are connected into a single area, and the red line never loops back on itself. This satisfies both rules.

So next, I've un-highlighted one cell, which I shaded darker:

f95_example_3.png

Now the imaginary red line is broken into two pieces. This breaks the first rule, while the second rule about loops isn't affected.

And so now let's reconnect the two pieces, but add another highlighted cell, in yellow:

f95_example_4.png

Now we've broken rule 2, in that we have a closed loop. And you can see that the other diagonally-touching cells don't count as connected.

Hope that helped!

Congrats for this amazing game. The puzzles are a very nice addition :)

For daydream 3 i ended up with this but it says it is incorrect. Am i missing something?

Yes, the same me and many others missed, rule 3 is broken, you have 2 2x2 areas.
You are right, thanks.
It seems i didn't read the "non-highlighted" part of the rule as well.
If i may offer a suggestion, the part of the text that says "highlighted or non-highlighted" could be made bold.

Anyway, amazing game and i can't wait for more :)

I'm glad you're it enjoying it so far! I indeed have already updated both the tutorial (reiterates that the rule applies to both) and the rule examples (shows both the highlighted and non-highlighted conditions being broken) for the next release, which is well underway.

Has anyone else had trouble getting this game running? Nothing seems to happen when I try launching the .exe normally. Running as admin causes the usual UAC prompt, but after that nothing.

UnRen.bat can't find python.exe, probably because this game uses Python 3.9 instead of the usual 2.x you see in most Ren'Py games.

Hmm... You're the first person I've heard mention that they can't get it to run

Hello! Gf and I checked out your cute game and we are lovers of puzzles and I am not sure why so many had issues with the puzzles as they are clearly explained in the tutorials and wasn't very hard to solve. I suppose most guys were thinking with the wrong head as the Gf pointed out lol. Thanks for putting a nice twist to your game as we both truly enjoyed it. Can't wait for future updates.
Big Hugs from the both of us.

Thank you both for the kind words! I suspect it was a vocal minority who had fundamental problems with it, as I've had lots of positive responses to the puzzles too. In the end it was definitely the right choice to offer the option to skip them, though.

"wasn't very hard to solve" — For the first release, I intentionally kept the difficulty manageable. Following updates will include 4- and 5-star puzzles, which hopefully will scratch that itch :). Edit: Some more context is that while I can make the puzzles much harder, it's probably not the right medium (adult VNs, that is) to push players so hard that they end up spending 20+ minutes on a puzzle. What I might do at some point is release a companion puzzle game with more difficult puzzles for those who are interested... as time allows.

"Can't wait for future updates" — Stay tuned, info coming soon regarding the next update! Be sure to join the discord if you haven't yet, that's where I'm most active with news and such.

+1 to enjoying the puzzles! This site is kinda the last place I expected to see nikoli-style puzzles (of which I've been a longtime fan!) and this one seems well-designed with great potential for depth. Not to mention the game's got a bunch of my favorite lewd tags. I'm definitely gonna be following this one closely, as well as the companion puzzle game should that come to fruition.

I've been waiting for someone to mention the long history of these kinds of puzzles! Took me a while to work out which way to go with it, especially with the other two planned puzzle types that share the four standard rules. Glad you liked it! The next update has four new main puzzles and four mini puzzles to look forward to! :)

Another option would be to include something along the lines of easy/hard modes, and let the players decide for themselves.
That way you also get to 'scratch the itch' of creating the puzzles, keeping you mentally engaged in the process.
Some folks can operate on a sort of mental 'cruise control' without the quality of their work suffering.
Some folks need a challenge or their mind starts to wander and their quality slips.
Figure out which you are and plan the game development accordingly ;)

What frustrates me is these are games, games have gameplay and puzzles are a part of that.

Why, oh why, would you download adult games and then complain about gameplay.
Love you Ava... Going to have to disagree with you here, dear. This is your "why, oh why" answer in my usual, mace blunt honest style... No malice or offence inferred or intended. This comment may not be suitable for all viewers. Viewer discretion is advised. Please don't hate me for being honest...

Okay... TBH, the only puzzle that I expect in Ren'Py titles is, "What choices do I need to make to unlock all of this content?" That is what Ren'Py does best, not these complex puzzles. The puzzles in this game may be simple once you know how to solve them but they are something that I would expect to see in Unity, RPGM, Unreal Engine and the like, not in a Ren'Py game.

TessaXYZ has already struck the perfect solution for the folks, like me who didn't enjoy these puzzles, especially their poor placement, by quickly introducing a story mode. That was perfect for me and I instantly apologized for having been such a curmudgeon at the time. In fact, I was elated! So, I am no longer complaining, merely addressing your question as to, "why?"

When puzzles are included in Ren'Py AVN titles, I expect them to be immersive, not something totally unrelated and alien to the subject matter. I also expect they not to be cock blocking chastity devices in the middle of an intimate moment. I see scrambled image puzzles featuring a sexy image of the girl who is about to be featured in the scene before an intimate moment but this is the first game that I ever saw a puzzle during an intimate moment. It totally broke my mood. I saw it as an affront to the sex appeal of the game rather than a challenge. I see a rather attractive woman about to pleasure herself and I am totally into that... then I see a puzzle that has no resemblance to anything sexy, just a box of connect the dots, essentially. Then I read that I could skip it but I lose the content that puzzle unlocks... Well, I lost it right there and ranted a blue streak in forum here on account. To give a hypothetical real world comparison would be like having your girl get you all worked up and wanting sex, then telling you that you have to complete the New York Times daily crossword before you can proceed or you can skip the puzzle but you have to turn out the lights and don't get to view her gorgeous body during the love making. THAT is how these puzzles came across to me. Not only are they un-immersive, they are poorly placed during intimate moments. THAT is why I was totally incensed into a raging rant, not the fact that there were puzzles. Once an intimate scene begins the only interaction I expect is to click to advance frame, choose the next position and where I want to climax. Once the beautiful woman is naked and getting into the mood, there should be no more puzzles, only joy, pleasure, bliss, lots of orgasms and maybe a good "O" face shot before the final climax. Break that up at your peril. The ads are placed before and/or after the sex in porn videos for the same reason. Once you start the sexy part, you do not stop for anything.

I don't really enjoy puzzles in these types of titles (too much like actual work for me, I can do them, it's just not fun) but where they are placed and what type of puzzle games are employed has everything to do with my reaction to them, like a sorting puzzle to complete an otherwise mundane task, a computer based puzzle to simulate hacking a terminal or even puzzles like this game has to unlock all of the naughty content in the upcoming chapter and I would learn to solve the puzzle and solve it without complaint. Would I enjoy it? Not really but I would do them without complaining and maybe even gain a bit of satisfaction in finding the solution. But, putting them in once the intimate scene has started? Aw Hell No! I actually took that placement as an insult, hence my rather volatile initial reaction. Again, if the puzzle were placed in front of the sexy scene rather than during, my reaction would have been much softer. I still would not like having to run a puzzle with no relationship to the sex scene before getting to the sexy part but my reaction would have been softer. However, losing content due to skipping the puzzle and having the puzzle in the middle of the sexy part were both deal breakers for me.

Okay... not going back into rant mode... this has been solved with the introduction of story mode. I hope my answer made sense to you, dear friend. I do not mean to insult you or anyone with this opinion because it is just that, MY opinion. No one else need share it and I do not force my opinions on anyone else.

Again, love you Ava. Hope you are well. Adventure ever on my friend, Phat;)(y)

PS: HUGE Thanks to TessaXYZ for this wonderfully enchanting and engrossing story! Huge Thanks for story mode too! I am chomping at the bit like a prized stallion for your next installment! LOVE this story!!!
