I honestly didn't feel anything for Casio (or really, anyone other than Eleonora), but I did find myself getting really attached to Noah in Chapter 2. I think the little emote bubble responses just worked out perfectly with his whole character of being helpful to a fault.

So far, I do like Leto. Not quite as much as Noah, but it also isn't fair to judge him at this point in the story because he hasn't been put into any really tense situations with the NTR yet. More than anything, I am just hopeful that his role in the endings will feel unique from the previous game (particularly for the NTR and Revenge endings)

Personally I don't understand N_Taii's desire to keep players from empathizing with the MCs of his games. If we're not empathizing with the main character the NTR is less effective and the endings are less satisfying. The simple fact of the matter is that characters talk to Leto, Noa, and Casio as if they can speak and react to them like they are speaking so they might as well speak.

I was able to empathize and feel sad for Noah in the NTR ending. He was a guy who meant well all the time, always selfless and helpful, and pretty trustful of others. What happened to him at the end was heartbreaking.

nah, I am 100% sure that I wouldn't feel bad for Noah if he could've spoken, I think it's good with just the text bubbles

If we're being fair Noa is portrayed as being naive to the point of almost being mentally and emotionally delayed. I don't think it's possible for me to empathize with him and Casio because they're bad characters. Casio is such a blank slate that it's hard to even believe there's any actual NTR involved in HC1, empathizing with him is impossible because there's nothing there to empathize with. Giving him the ability to speak could have helped with at least giving him personality.

Noa has the distinction of everyone he knows having so little faith in him that his mother and adopted sister use his protection and care as a thin justification for sex with no reason to believe he needs protection. Noa is impossible to empathize with because HC2 gives us no reason to empathize with him since literally no one else except for the guy actually being cucked by his own dad seems to even respect him. Giving him the ability to speak would have given him an actual personality.

Hell, if the point is to not empathize with the MCs then having them speak might actually help since between not being able to rename the MC and giving the MC a more defined personality by having them speak we're left with characters who are not our nameless, faceless avatars. Mute protagonists are lazy and should have been left in the 90s where they belong.

I dunno, I never saw myself as those characters, I just felt horrible for them. Though often times imagined how I would respond in their situation. To me, those sweet smiles coupled with speech bubbles make them so precious, I couldnt imagine how that should make me emotionally distant towards them.

I think its impossible to not feel bad for him even if he was the shittiest person he could be without breaking the story if he got a voice. His story is that sad. I will never forgive Celis and Aywin for ignoring him and just giving him food like a dog whilst he was unresponsive like a legume. Thats actual torture porn at that point.

HC2 good ending was awesome to me just on the basis of seeing Noah being happy without going full edgy.

See, you're actually proving my point. You're empathizing with the characters when they have very little personality. If they had dialogue then they would have more clearly defined personalities and you'd empathize with them more which would make the NTR more effective. I'm not sitting here suggesting that Leto become a chatterbox but instead that instead of popping up an animu sweat drop or a squiggly line when he encounters blatant sexual behaviour that he express himself with words.

Updates 10 and 11 are the primary reasons why I believe Leto should be speaking. He has a couple of moments where he animu emotes instead of speaking words and it just makes him come across as pathetic when previously he's been shown to be a fairly competent if not uptight young man. Those scenes lead to consequences that he has not yet realized and in my mind they'd have been more effective if he'd expressed his feelings instead of just going "animu squiggle".

Is this your first NTR game? Every male protagonist is pathetic in some way. That's how the NTR works. If your MC was a competent, well-adjusted hero, he wouldn't be cucked in the first place. If he did, he'd be able to catch it quick and end it just as quick. Humiliation is a huge part of NTR/cuckolding. These Henteria protagonists are too imperceptive to recognize that their loved ones are doing sexual acts, or they're too weak-willed to stop it. And that's what keeps the NTR going.

I don't believe you are wrong but i believe it's not about right or wrong, good or bad.
It's simply a choice of preference, a choice of how you want to approach the story(telling).
If Leto would speak, it could strenghten his own character and personality, give us a deeper impression of him. It would also lead to more immersion of us, seeing the story unfold as Leto. I think this is what you mean with "make ntr more effective".

That said, the current approach is simply different. Instead of playing as Leto it sees us as outsiders, as observers. We can see everything he sees and even more but we are clearly not him. This way increases the trope of a (helpless) observer, seeing and knowing everything but clearly not being the mc himself nor able to interact with the story itself.

To make it short, i believe one approach is better for self immsersion/character depth and the other suits a passive/helpless observer perspective more. Whether this dillutes the feeling of ntr or not depends on the individual. People who prefer self immersion will find it annoying while others would dislike a change.

I wonder if it would be a good idea to give the mc a voice in critical situations only or where we really need to see what he has to say, like the letter Noah leaves behind in the true ending.

One things that annoys me with speech bubbles is that the same speech bubble is used for "ah, I stepped in a puddle" and for "You betrayed me!". I know its stupid, but sometimes I wish the speech bubble appear several times, maybe even interrupting the other characters, sort of like "enough bullshit", in times of revealing the enemy's plan. And then we get what the mc said by the other's responses, like normal. Even if he doesnt have a voice for us to see, I want the other characters to treat him like he has one when he's obviously pissed or really has somthing to say.

I would clap in my room if the mc suddenly went "SHUT THE FUCK UP!" when the heroines be yapping excuses, and then go back to speech bubbles lol.

I dunno, all these games have fantastic story and conflict, towards the end I actually enjoy them as great drama literature or stories, but the conflicts peaks between mc and heroines, the "how could you?" moments, the confrontation moments with them always feel so unsatisfying. One times I really liked how this was done is with Celis in true ending. You dont trust her again and she works to earn your trust back.

It's clearly not my first. And I'm literally suggesting using speech to develop the personalities of the characters in in turn strengthen the NTR. Furthermore HC3 treats Leto as a competent, well adjusted hero, which renders whatever point you're making moot.

I love how the chat dies down every now and then and Oriandu's arguing brings it back alive
In my defence I often post something I don't believe to be controversial and everyone is either all "Fuck you, you're wrong, suck my dick!" or it sparks a multiple page debate. It's usually not intentional. :p
