Not to suggest taking time away from developing the game, which I've very much enjoyed, but I have to say you should consider making an album if you have time at some point. That theme could be played in a mix with the likes of Lazerhawk, Perturbator, Gunship, and other synthwave greats and fit right in with no dropoff in quality noticeable between your track and those of the established names. It's that good.

The game is great as well, and as a Gen Xer who grew up on 80s culture as it was happening I've found it much like a pleasant trip back in time. I wouldn't say every detail is perfect, but it's more than close enough it feels right. One thing that stands out though, "vegan" didn't really become well known until the 90s at the earliest, it's far more likely the character would ask for a vegetarian option. Nor was avoiding gluten a thing outside those who had been diagnosed with a medical intolerance, for that matter. Hell, sushi hadn't even caught on outside of California!

It was a different time, I was born in '72, which put me in the graduating class of 1990 and not far off in age from the protagonists of this game. I can still clearly remember full service or self service gas stations being an option, and a choice between "regular" and unleaded gasoline, and yeah that stuff was mostly gone by '89, but it would still be in relatively recent memory. Nor was strict ID for cigarettes a thing yet, smoking sections still existed in restaurants and many other businesses and bars were almost never non-smoking, cigarette vending machines were common, and in much of the country the drinking age was still 18. Japanese compact cars were everywhere and many were in the sweet spot of being affordable enough for teenagers in the used market but still going strong mechanically thanks to quality Japanese build, and in particular at that time there was a HUGE boom in popularity for compact Japanese trucks with the low rider and massively overpowered sound system trends being in full swing. The Ford Mustang was the teenage jock-bro car of choice for those who weren't rich enough to drive a European import. Cassettes still dominated audio, vinyl was mostly considered obsolete and undesirable, and those who had the money were upgrading their music collection to CD. Digital was a point of pride, analog was considered the past and the budget option on its way out. BMX bicycles still retained some of its former popularity from the boom years of the late 70s early 80s but the popular style had shifted towards the "freestyle" variant and mountain bikes were the new hot thing. Arcades were still a thing but had entered a lull that lasted from the Video Game Crash of '84 to the release of Street Fighter II in 1991 which revitalized the arcade scene and was a huge cultural phenomenon. Commodore 64 was still the most popular home computer, though it was slowly losing its crown, schools still used Apple II machines, IBM Selectric typewriters were the office machine of choice alongside business computers and copy machines and fax, and what we now call the PC was still referred to as "IBM-compatible" and most were in the office and not in the home. The majority ran MS-DOS with few people having even heard of Windows prior to Windows 3.1 in 1991 and it didn't become ubiquitous until Windows '95. There was no consumer internet yet as we know it, but dial-in computer Bulletin Board Systems (BBS) were popular in the geek crowd. Wal-Mart existed but was considered largely a slightly less "cheap crap" alternative to K-Mart and the shopping mall was still dominant along with the rise of the suburban "strip mall". Sony was the king of consumer electronics, wood-cabinet floor televisions were still a thing but the trend was box televisions mounted in specialized bookshelf-like furniture called "entertainment centers" that always had a spot for a VCR and tapes and often included a spot for a stereo system. Car phones were a luxury status symbol, cordless home phones (but still connected to a landline) were popular but the touch-tone landline phone was still the standard while rotary dial phones were a relic.

I could go on and on, but I've already rambled down memory lane too much and you probably already knew most of this. Anyhow, keep up the good work and I'm looking forward to more.
Thanks for the thoughtful comments. I do plan to get the music up on streaming services eventually. I’ve been around the music industry before, and without getting into all the boring details, part of the joy of this project right now is that it’s fun and free from a lot of the headaches that come with that world. :)

You’re right that little details like Scotty’s veganism are more modern nods. The game has a self aware streak, so things like Savannah’s spank meme joke during her photoshoot, James quoting “You know, I’m something of an entrepreneur myself,” and other small winks to culture in the 2000s will slip in from time to time. It’s part of the playful absurdity.

On the piercings/tattoos point brought up by others, there’s a long history of alternative culture pushing those looks, and the character that was mentioned, Morgan, is loosely inspired by musicians like Wendy O. Williams or characters from Return of the Living Dead and The Decline of Western Civilization. Everything is dialed up to 11 on purpose. This isn’t meant to be a perfect historical view of smalltown America in 1989, it’s a heightened, over the top fantasy. Honestly, what’s more far-fetched: that a couple of girls have too many piercings for the era, or that every attractive neighbor and classmate wants to seduce the main character?

At the end of the day, if some parts of the story feel exaggerated, that’s by design. It’s not a documentary about a real kid in a real town, it’s a popcorn fantasy about vampires, romance, and ridiculous adventure inspired by life in that time. In 1989 most of us would’ve considered it a win just to score a kiss at Pizza Hut before catching a movie, let alone ending up in the middle of this kind of madness.

So my advice: don’t sweat the realism too hard. Grab a slice of pizza, lean into the chaos, and enjoy the ride.

I'll be there for it when you do! I posted the link to a webhosted version to a bunch of my friends who don't even play this type of game and told them to just leave the start page and enjoy the music, and I got a lot of agreement that it was really good. In fact I was confused at first I couldn't find the credit for the theme song, because I was convinced it was from a major synthwave artist. It's certainly of a quality it could have been.

Don't force yourself to rush to the studio, though, burnout is a thing and you won't do yourself any good pushing in a direction you don't have the patience for. I'm enjoying the game anyhow so I certainly don't mind you focusing on that. If you do drop an album at any point though, when the time is right to deal with that headache, I'll make sure to spread the word about it to my synthwave loving friends and see if I can't get a sale or two for you.

On Topic General Rules Violation #2.1 - All discussions in these threads should be kept on-topic and be about the game/content/creator/etc
Hey everyone, hope this post finds you all safe and well.

Just a kind reminder to keep the conversation strictly about the game - and to please refrain from getting into any off-topic bickering around what clothing/fashion choices women wore from the 80s or 90s.

Feel free to discuss further in our General Discussions: 'Off-Topic' sub-forum and/or offline on a platform like Discord, should you wish to keep up these debates in private.

Thank you all for your cooperation and understanding in this matter.

With kind regards,

~ X|M

This might be adding a pointless side detail to beating a dead horse argument but: Photoshop uses generative AI for fills and some other stuff. The filtering/fills may be adding that. I'd add that this game has a very distinct visual style and seems to be a pretty high quality. A bit of jank here and there doesn't invalidate the effort. The real issue with AI slop is the low effort nature of it. Even if this were 100% AI the creator is spending enough time to get semi consistent results and reasonable content.

Fatalmasterpiece You've made a fantastic game here. I blew through all the current content in 2 nights and am hungry for more. Just fun vibes and interesting characters.

My one thing is: I hope we don't get penalised/get the bad ending if we advance too many girls' storylines (partially). You mentioned on 1st page that the endings will differ (not afraid of different, but will be sad with a bad ending).

I've really enjoyed playing this mostly as a game game not a porn game if that makes sense (a rare accolade for F95zone). I will be exploring as much of the story/mystery as I can. I'm not chasing a harem ending (in fact most times I avoid it); I just mean that if you hit most of the peripheral story beats you probably advance the "relationship meter" of most girls by some degree incidentally right? Hoping to play this like, as you say above, a popcorn fantasy and not like an actual dating sim.

I have full confidence that whatever you pull off will be fantastic if the current work is anything to go by. It's a testament that I would even be sad at a bad ending in the first place o_O

I usually go and change the variables so I save both.
And I'm assuming you'll also change all the subsequent scenes and dialogue, because if not, I'm pretty sure the game will play out in a rather strange way with two characters simultaneously alive and dead. I can't say for sure, because I haven't played it, but I suspect it won't be exactly coherent.

Is this game hand-drawn or made by AI? If it's the former, then I'm convinced to play it.

I'm not familiar with American education. What is the problem here?
MC has grade D for 75% of the course. Why getting B for 35% will downgrade him to an F?

I would understand it if he already had F-grade for 75% and then yes, getting D, C or even B for the remaining 35% would't let him improve to E or D.

Yeah, makes no sense at all. But... I don't care.

Damn. Math in VNs.

If we're making an assumption the course is 100 points in total (to keep the math easy) meaning the final is worth 35 points. American, a D would be 60-69%. There's no way a B (80-89%) on the final would cause him to have an F overall.

Someone correct my math if I'm wrong.

That said, this isn't really a focus. I'm hesitant to call it filler dialogue since it could come back up but it hasn't really played a part yet, other than the MC feeling the need to bust his ass on the final. Maybe this teacher isn't great at math. :ROFLMAO:

Hi Fatalmasterpiece.

I like the art.
The story kept me hooked.
The girls are all great. At the same time sexy, but with their own personalities an interesting personal stories.
Sure some are a bit stereotyped, like the ingenue who knows nothing about sex, the bitchy girls, or the Ice Queen with a fragile facet. But it's what we can expect from a teenage movies.
I really enjoyed your game so far, and you win a new Patreon.

I was about to write about Scotty veganism in the 80's, but you just explain that :)

This may be based on 3D models, but it's not just filters. It's AI. Now maybe the filters use AI tech, but there's things that just can't be explained by "just filters".

How is this just "filters"?

And again, what's going on with that eye? And how did the dev not catch this when putting the images into the game?
