Another thing is that I'm not quite sure that it was satellite that was used for video communication there, and not, say, a regular radio waves and receiving antennas...About the same way obsolete analog terrestrial television works (Image and sound converted into electrical signals are transmitted through the air (as radio waves)).
I can understand you thinking about that possibility but, I can tell you, it would require numerous retransmission towers for UHF or VHF signals (TV) or AM or FM signals (radio) to reach any substantial distance because of the curvature of the earth. Most radio you listen to today is digital and is broadcast through digital satellites. Local stations that you get on your radio are usually limited to about an 80 mile radius. There are still a few old style AM and FM transmissions that broadcast to a large area but they also use a special AM/FM satellite.
