This is one of those weird things that is technically very impressive but leaves me completely unimpressed.

No. There isn't much of a main story. It's more of a sandbox where girls have their individual stories - a lot of which aren't finished. There are plans to finish Vren's character stories though
We've tried to alleviate some of the grind Vren added. But even if that sucks still, there's a built in cheat menu
I haven't paid a ton of attention to the git updates, but basically the changes have been converting Vren's code to be in line with how the mod has been done. Also porting it to renpy 8, solving bugs that come with all that. I think some new sounds. Definitely missed some stuff though

It is the mod fully integrated with the vanilla game. So what was in the mod is now available as a single game. You do have to enable it.

the person has to be on your screen for the game to process the commands

That's what I thought, and they were, but it just kept saying "person not defined", also I tried maxing energy for mc, and it showed numerical value 100, but that amount didn't show in game, so I'm messing up something if those are suppose to work! lol

This game needs a graphical rebuilt...
I think attempting said rebuild was part of what killed off the dev's involvement from the project (the magnitude of implementing different graphics may have been too much)
