I beat him with butterfree.
I just leveled it up to lvl50 first.

Yep. Keep skills that do actual damage during evolution. any pokemon can 1 hit kill everything if you level them up enough. trick is some skills do no damage at all so keep not of skill that actually kill and keep atleast 1. Oh and dishing skills does not affect the training sessions atleast not yet. so in training they will still have the skill you dished.
