One of the few times I prefer western porn games' take is the violated heroine lose-rape scenario. In games like this I'm with you, literally all of the sex scenes are absolutely miserable to read and I often just end up clicking through them because they're also all the same. Games like Corruption of Champions, Lust Doll, or Tales of Androgyny at least have hot loss scenes. I can't imagine actually getting off to scenes in this game without being a hardcore misogynist. They're not just getting raped, 9 times out of 10 they're legitimately traumatized, in pain, and more than that the scenes themselves just smash that one note over and over again. I just end up rolling my eyes when the 33rd pathetic rapist tells her that he's going to punish her for the terrible crime of being a woman in his general vicinity. Even for sadism it's the most utterly banal insecure boy crap.
But the games themselves are pretty fun outside of the awful awful sex content. I just beat this one the first time through and a number of the battles were cleverly designed and I like how the story had you tracking the princess through the town.
Basically a lot of these games, especially the Kagura ones, are fun not because of but in spite of their sex content.
Yeah, that's a very specifically Japanese attitude that's just kinda silly even in context.
Basically their cultural idea of purity isn't confined to chastity like in the west, it's much broader, applying to everything from changing your dirty outside shoes to clean inside shoes so as to keep your home pure to an aversion to buying things (even houses and renting apartments) secondhand because there's a sense that they've been dirtied. Sex, and the areas used for sex, even, are considered inherently dirty and need to be cleansed before and after.
Games like this play that out to a crazy-absurd extreme in insisting that the heroine has to be raped ("dirtied") before she can engage in sex of any kind and once dirtied she gets dirtier. In this game it's an actual percentage of dirtiness with the lust worm and there's even a cleansing ritual to make her pure again if she's dirtied.
They'd definitely be better if they didn't act like a woman needs to be stripped of all worth before she'd consider having not-rape-but-still-kinda-rapey sex. ...Or even just some variety. Like c'mon, how about one or two consesual scenes with the actual cast to go along with the 30+ anonymous rapist scenes?

go play Teaching Feeling or Nai's Training Diary if you're looking for wholesome promiscuity and leave my crazy-absurd extreme corruption rape fantasy games alone. This game is literally catering to the opposite of consensual sex so why even bother using this to insinuate that the japanese literally have this mentality towards women? It's a fetish for a reason
The way the scenes play out is more or less the same regardless of the tone. The mentality is that sex is dirty and so are the parts used for it (and dirty as in dirty, not dirty as in naughty or wrong) so whether it's rape or consensual the script is usually that she is corrupted/dirtied by him pushing forward even as she says not to dirty her - and that's where tone comes in, it's either harsh and miserable like this game or coquettish in the saccharine ones.
That's the actual-mentality-they-have (and not focused solely on women and sex but towards the idea of purity, cleansing, and the idea of becoming unclean and therefore without morals or integrity or self-respect).
It's a fetish to corrupt/dirty women but it's not like that -has- to be the only avenue for it in a violated heroine game. Lots of them also have consensual scenes thrown in to break up the monotony of misery. I really would have liked one with the Lizardman you can rescue; he's cute and one of like 3 men in the game who aren't a psycho loser.

Any ideas on where to progress now? I'm in the chapel basement, but they're all dead ends. Stepping on the purple glyphs did nothing. (This is on lawful/normal route, cless is in party)

Check if you have the feather boots on. You can't warp on the panels if that is equipped. Otherwise once you warp, you'll find your way out.
Thanks, that solved it! Was worried that my game just glitched and I was prepared to reload from a day earlier
Wander around town, visit the church regulary, and you should eventually spot a mirror : smash it.
Repeat this process until a boss shows up.
