The West is still very conservative towards sex and the porn industry.
I strongly disagree with that. Quite the contrary, the West still is the most sex-positive and porn-industrious part of the world. Modern porn was actually invented in the West and the West is still pushing the envelope of what is morally and legally acceptable when it comes to socio-sexual mores. After all, SubscribeStar is based in USA and the creator of this game openly admits they are making a lot basically writing smut, more than I am in my wholesome boring office job. Prostitution and pornography in the West is now becoming sex work. I don't think any other part of the world has commodified intimacy and sexual desires as profoundly as the West. Which creates issues of its own, if we're being honest with ourselves.
The core of the problem regarding amateur porn game creators using subscription-style financial model, instead of selling the finished product at least in part stems from the paradigm shift in computer software use/ownership. Monthly subscription instead of once-off payment is now the norm, whether it's an office application or a non-porn game. There is also this vast area of nominally free online services and porn as a whole (not just games, but also literature, graphic art and audiovisual performances featuring live performers) occupies this awkward space between paid and nominally free. As most porn users usually don't pay for their online porn, those who do sooner or later develop this entitled attitude of a paying customer and, as is often the case in amateur gaming industry (which the other participants in this discussion noticed), developers become commissioned artists, or - to use a more drastic metaphor - sex workers who cater to their client's, not their own, desires. In result, the end product can often be a half-hearted, insincere pursuit of cheap thrills that the author in their heart of hearts does not feel nor obsess about - they will add this or that just because it is now in vogue.
You may find me weird, but apart from having my own kinks and preferences, the thing I find most exciting not just in porn, but in exchange of sexual ideas of other people (and pornography, from the consumer's point of view, is in essence just that - absorption of sexual thoughts that were conceived in someone else's mind) is those other people's obsessions so consummate, yet sincere and articulate enough that they can seduce and corrupt me, even though I have never even entertained this or that idea. Alas, a lot of lewd game devs are not that proficient pornographers (compared to even amateur porn writers) and they run out of their own steam too fast, in effect drifting on their fans and supporters suggestions, while needlessly deluding themselves that their project will be such an opus magnum of porn gaming that it will take at least 5 years to complete.
