The new art is NOT bad. It's just different. There are some things it does better, some things that aren't as good, but overall the art is good.
Everyone in this thread keeps going on about the change in art, so I thought we could take a look at the same scene, compare the differences.
Take a look at the old version, what the heck is with that hallway? They're supposed to be at a university, not a cathedral. Alice is supposed to be the shy, small town girl, but she's got a tight pink sweater that hugs her boobs, shows off her midriff, and is standing in a pose that manages to accentuate both her ass and her chest at the same time. It never made sense when Lei made fun of her for her appearance, because Alice always looked hot. It always felt like in romance movies when we're expected to pretend that the main character is ugly because she has glasses on and will magically turn hot the moment she takes them off and does her hair.
In the new version Alice actually looks her part. She's got the exact same outfit on, without the Instagram model pose and with the sweater being less pink and tight, she actually does look like a nerdy, shy girl. She's even wearing her backpack with both straps on.
This seems to be the case with a lot of the art, in the old version Marcus' apartment seemed way to fancy for a college kid to rent, and Marcus's shirtless scene was like he got cast in a Marvel movie. Overall, it never felt realistic, it felt like the game wasn't based in reality but was a CW-show version of reality.
The new art is less photo realistic in style but manages to feel more representative of reality than the old one.
