For the record, sand is almost certainly getting fixed (at the very least, it's fixed in some or most renders)! :)
The foundation being all wonky in the reference image was also fixed (I didn't notice displacement moved the faces a significant amount.)

Ello Otters!

There's one more playtest for the Playtest Otters, and we are good to go! Initial reviews have been great, aside from a few critiques about how to fix a few renders. Most of those are rookie mistakes we can fix easily. That's what we are doing with our paws right now while the Playtesters play this section of the game and we continue to wait for the animators.
With early access coming, we are going to give you the blog we have been planning for a year! Why was there such a big gap between Chapter 2 and Chapter 3?

Let's talk about the magical formula!

+Back in March of last year, our previous artist, as you know, quit. It then took him about a month to get our Main Otter the assets for the game, and it was never every asset at once. Getting them was a ripe ole ache. That was about a month of no work being completed.

+I then needed a work computer (waterproof, of course). It had to be custom built and took about another month to get the rig. The graphics card was not powerful enough to render at that time, but was good enough to run Daz and beginning learning.

+Learning Daz Studio. It took about 6-7 months for an Otter with no previous 3d art experience to become proficient in Daz! It wasn't until about November that I was good enough to pretty much do everything on my own. In that same month, a better Nvidia graphics card was acquired. While it isn't the big boys of the pond, it can hold its own.

+In this time, with the help of the awesome Otters who had been working with us, we had been fixing the assets we were given for the game. And we. Mean. Fix! Every single time we opened something new it was another problem. Face assets weren't right. Hair was unruly. Rylee's face and Chrysta's face had to be completely revamped, with Gemma's, Rylee's, Xia's hair needing brand new assets all together. Layla's hair is still a mess, but we made it work for this Chapter. Environments had to be completely revamped too. Layla's House had a makeover, her beach is an entirely new asset, Coconut Academy is a new school... these things take way too much time to fix, but we swam through that maelstrom and have much better characters and environments!

+We had been working off of the duf from the finale of Chapter 2 and into Chapter 3. That first part is over 200 renders, so we didn't know that because the characters had been positioned so far from the center that any sort of render decorates the characters with artifacts. We had to completely redo this scene. This was, of course, a rookie mistake. Rookie mistakes are gonna happen, and ever since I, the Main Otter, began rendering as well, I have been learning and adapting and mastering Daz. I am happy to tell you all that I am now quite comfortable with Daz and can pose and render much, much faster and better.

+Between all these thing and little things between, that is why it has been a year between any major release! Like, pretty much exactly a year between that release and this one. We promise this won't happen again! Now that I am the Otter for everything in the game, aside from animations, things are going at a much better pace. This year, you are guaranteed Chapters 3 and 4. I cam actually pose a whole chapter now in a few months. Is there much to learn and master? Yeah, eh. Lighting and camera work is always a nuance that requires the most attentive of whiskers. It's going to look better with every new chapter!
We want to thank all our Otters for their patience, understanding, and above all, the faith in our paws to make the best game possible. It's because of you and the belief we have in Matrix Hearts that we have made it this far. And we are going to swim much further in this big ole ocean!

You're about to play Chapter 3 Part 1, and we can't wait for you to enjoy!

Having been there, yes, quite literally every. single. character. had at least some tweak between the originally provided save and what is actively used. At the very least, such as with Layla, it was as simple as turning down the shinyness of the skin. For others, such as Rylee, there were noticeable differences between their past appearance in the game and how they appear in Daz. (Sometimes even the very structure of their face seemed different!)

That first part is over 200 renders, so we didn't know that because the characters had been positioned so far from the center that any sort of render decorates the characters with artifacts.
For people with a background in or understanding of reasonable 3D software, this may seem unusual, but if characters are positioned far from the world origin, even if it's seemingly not all that far (just a couple meters is sometimes enough to do it), iray will start to artifact, most noticeably where the character's hair cap is close to or intersecting with the base model ( ).

This is not possible to see in the textured preview in Daz, and is an issue that you wouldn't expect to occur, so I am not at all surprised that Otter got an entire scene ruined because of it. While it's an easy fix, it's still tedious and painfully slow because loading one scene file can often take several minutes (!) with Daz.

TL;DR: As I've said (admittedly too) many times before, Otter is new to all this, and so much work and learning had to be done behind the scenes to get things back to a state of usability. There are and absolutely will be newbie mistakes, and there will absolutely be a difference in style visible between past chapters and future ones. That said, there's quite literally no other person I'd want to run that ship, because despite the god awful hand he was dealt, he somehow managed to pull through with it.

Thank you for putting this out there with all the nitty gritty details. This is a great explanation and makes sense. I have been burned on Patreon many times by multiple developers milking the system. I am fairly new to this game and was assuming you were one as well. I may wait for your NEXT update (to be safe that this is not a milk job) but I am satisfied that this was a legitimate delay. Best of luck in your development and by taking taking the time to explain the full situation, you very likely just earned me as a contributor.

I feel like i've been waiting 27 years for this next update and if what they're saying is true and it's almost ready, I don't think i've ever been so excited before because this game truly is enjoyable.

Hope to play soon!

It is completely understandable that you would withhold any financial support until you're more confident in the game's future.

While the delay was legitimate, it certainly was unacceptably long by any metric. Even with an understanding of why it took so long (everything graphics-related was lost for a while, even down to the very character models!), many of the issues that came up over the past year and then some should not have happened in the first place. When they did happen, they really should not have been nearly as much of an issue as they were.

While Chapter 3 was in development, I already managed to forget about this game, thanks to alerts I remembered about its existence.
I can close my eyes to the year of development if in the new chapter:
- Interesting and captivating storyline
- Great graphics (the better, the longer rendering takes)
- Large update size if there are 4000-5000 static renders and a dozen animated scenes.
Let's see what happens, I definitely don't have to worry about the plot.

I can tell you now that you should probably try to temper your render expectations. Understand that Blue Otter Games is new. Like, really new. It's only been about a year since they opened Daz for the first time, ever, with no experience in any 3D software whatsoever beforehand, and the actual amount of time that they've been able to render on their own is less than that.

There will be mistakes and issues with rendering quality...

but others may not.

As for the 4-5k render count, that plain and simply is not going to happen. The entire game (Chapter 1 + 2) totals to 3.5k renders, and while I don't have the script for it, I would personally expect Chapter 3 to be closer to the 1k renders of Chapter 1. (Maybe Otter will surprise us with much more, but from what I've seen and my knowledge of the situation, I have my doubts.)

Ello Otters!

Happy clams for everyone, playtesting is complete! We want to thank the Otters who had to swim through that maelstrom. It wasn't exactly pretty most of the time, but you only get better if you know what to fix. Life lessons.
That means early access is right around the reef! There's a few minor graphical things we want to fix that our playtesters found. There are pixelation issues in a few of the ocean renders, the fixing of the beach for the first big scene, and making the new adjustments to Coconut Academy. You can take a gander at the fixes we are implementing in the renders. These are little fixes, and are only going to take us this week to finish.
If you want to brush up on Chapters 1 and 2, this week is perfect! The Chapter 3 ocean is almost playable.
Splish-splash!

Ello! Tis time for GAMING!

Chapter 3 Part 1 is only a few renders from completion. This is going to be the non-animation version while we wait for the animators to finish them. Keep in mind though, there are a few animations in the game right now. We're waiting for the other scenes.
Otter Kings/Queens, Ultra-Omega Otters, and Big Ole Otters are going to be playing on Feb. 26th for their early access. Otters then can play on the 27th for their early access.
Thank you all for being the best Otters any ocean mammal could ever ask for. Chapter 3 is here! Let's play Lewd Games!
We hope you enjoy!

I'm not 1000% sure on one specific date, but early or middle of next week.

Certain Patreon tiers currently already have an early access version.
Just as clarification for this, I am not Blue Otter nor do I speak on their behalf for this. Early to middle of next week is just an educated guess of mine.

Blue Otter didn't make the public dates especially clear, and the release schedule schedule communicated through the Patreon tiers has been greatly accelerated for this release. (The 1 week difference between the $20 and $10 tiers is only just a couple of days this time around.)

While I'm comfortable with the prediction, I could be wrong. I'll let you know if I'm so wrong that Otter blows up my Discord for it.

We were going to wait to release a build to everyone until we have the animation in a week or two, but if there are enough paws wanting to play the non-animation edition, we can release that this weekend.

If you would like to play the non-animation version, please reply! Patrons are playing!

Your writing more than makes up for the lack of annimations. So I also say bring it on. I don't mind playing it multiple times.
