I have done just this and you have been right on all accounts you mentioned above. It takes time and not giving up. I have some knowledge of material nodes working with Max and more recently Blender - so I understand the concept.If you want to make these renders I'd suggest you download the free version of the Octane plugin for Daz and just get going
It will take some time to understand how materials and light work in octane but it becomes intuitive very fast. The best way to get better at something is to just do it
Top one is better. The other looks too cold colourwise It's a sunny beach and she's in summer outfit. It needs the warmer colour.just trying stuff in photoshop, opinions welcomed.

I noticed you have your model's eyes very clear, do you use another eye asset to get the eyes so shiny? I have used Photoshop to add some shine in a few of my renders.Thanks for the feed back, still learning a lot about photo shop
