Without tinkering with the console, you can't. It has been suggested (not confirmed as of yet) that you might be able to repair but actually this isn't a game breaking bug, the storline of Caroline doesn't require visiting her at night. The only thing you can do is that you try whatever you wish at that first visit when the bug doesn't occur (since you have the key then). The key disappears afterwards thats the problem since the code keeps looking for it while it not supposed to. At least thats what was suggested by one who looked into the code.

Then i'm afraid you are having a bug. Another player had the same issue with his or her game. Restart might be in order. I strongly recommend that since you really don't want to cling to a bugged save for continuation in later versions.
