I think time has shown that was a complete lie. I'd bet money he went on a hiatus after releasing the XMas 2018 update and just never came back. Changing the "% done" box on a website is free; telling patrons you're burned out and need a six-month break isn't. He wanted to ride the high of the XMas update for a few months and get paid for doing nothing, then pause the Patreon for a short "break" right about the time the bottom was going to fall out anyways. After all, who's going to say different? Certainly not the "team" of likely-underpaid contractors he leaves completely in the dark. Not to mention, from what I heard, he had alreadt done something like 60% of the work before going on break. Then still took about 4 months after coming back for release.
He probably thought he could get something out quickly when he came back, but it took longer than expected and exposed him badly. Four months for renders, another month and a half for animations, and as I've mentioned previously he's taking obvious shortcuts on both by reusing scenes and just moving the camera to a different angle. One scene @ three angles = three renders! "Look at my shiny render count, I totally wasn't doing nothing for six months!"
