Those backgrounds look great. I love UI elements that change to reflect characters' moods or progression.
One caution on cracking open quality games. Ren'Py changes surprisingly quickly (and v7.4 has big changes), so games that have been in development for a couple years, while excellent, may be using older code. Look for a new game by a developer of a good game in the hopes that they've rebuilt their code using current Ren'Py language. Or find a game that uses Ren'Py 7.4 so you know it's current.
I've been playing with mobile phone interfaces recently, so I feel your struggle. Screens layered on screens and hotspot poke-through can be a nuisance and the differences between the screen language and regular Ren'Py code can be frustrating. That said, implementing this menu would require various "hover" buttons and whatnot. I don't know how to do that. I'm gonna try to crack open some quality games that use the mechanic and see how they code it in RenPy. Maybe I can mimic it for MVB. If not, I'll probably put out an SOS here on this thread.
