Yes, it goes into the root folder of the game.

Actually, the key file unlocks the game for the full version. Without it, you can only play in normal mode and you get no rerolls for the fortune teller.

For everyone saying they are getting a white block for the guests, make sure when you extract the files, they go into a new folder. Don't overwrite any existing versions. And if you use a mapping file, that's safe to transfer over. Saves, however, are not. So you will need to start a new game.
