As a creator, I can say it's not that simple. There are no good alternatives to Patreon for one critical reason, and most people I've talked to who've been forced to switch to Subscribestar or another smaller platform, have said their income has substantially decreased, even long-term.
The problem isn't Patreon, it's online payment processors, like Paypal or Stripe, as well as capital investors. They refuse to do business with anyone doing pornography or sexwork, and if they discover your account is involved with such things, they'll freeze it. The reason Patreon is so big is because, in the beginning, it negotiated to carve out an exception to that policy, ostensibly so the art wouldn't be censored. But once it had grown big enough that NSFW creators were no longer necessary to the business's survival, the investors and payment processors started squeezing them, because they didn't want their money or services associated with smut. No rich investor or bank executive wants their rich friends to start calling them porn moguls.
